Mallory-Kaye`s birthstory

March 6th

7:45pm- The contractions begin. Just the preterm contractions that usually start at this time and end around 1am.

March 7th

1am- Contractions 4-5 minutes apart, 1 minute each, can`t sleep at all, just walking around hoping they go away so I can get some sleep.

7am- Contractions slowed to about 4 an hour. Called the doctor and they told me to come and get checked out.

12pm- We arrived at the doctor and they hooked me up to the monitors. I was 3.5cm and 100% effaced. They sent me home to rest, then start walking, and told me I would have the baby probably Sunday or Monday.

1pm- I tried to sleep but the contractions were becoming more frequent and I couldn`t sleep through them.

3pm-I convinced my husband we should go to the store so I could walk around, in hopes it would relieve/slow down the contractions. While in the store, the contractions were about 3-5 minutes apart, but the pain was taking my breath away and I had to stand over the cart (got lots of wierd stares). We hurried up and checked out so we could go home. Every bounce the car made intensified the contractions. We called the doctor and she said to come into the hospital.

5pm- We quickly packed the hospital bag and headed to the hospital. The pain was still strong and I knew this was it. Of all the contractions, these weren`t stopping and more painful than any preterm contraction I had ever had.

5:30pm- We checked into the hospital. They put me in the triage unit thinking I wasn`t ready and began to check me. The nurse in training checked me and said that I was 3cm dilated. I knew that wasn`t right because we just came from the doctor`s office at noon who said I was 3.5cm. So the real nurse checked me and said `oh no, she is 5cm, let`s get her into a delivery room.`

6-8pm- I got into the bathtub, threw up a couple times because of the pain. Did some birthing ball squats through the contractions. The breathing was really helpful when I could tink to do it. A couple of times my hands and feet were tingling and they said it was because I was hyperventalating.

8pm- They checked my cervix and woo hoo- 8cm dilated. Except now the pain was so intense that I couldn`t think about breathing. Luckily my doula and husband were so suppportive and really worked to keep me calm.

9:45pm- They checked me and I was 9.5cm dilated. There was just one little peice that wouldn`t go away. So they broke my water. Flood gates everywhere! They helped me stand up to try and get gravity to get that last 1/2 cm to go away. That contraction gave me the urge to push so bad that I couldn`t help it. I pushed standing up and I thought the baby was going to fall on the floor! Little did I know I still had plenty of pushing to get her out.

10-10:39pm- This is where I was really glad I didn`t get the epidural (although from 8-10 cm I was definitely considering it). I could feel exactly when I need to push and I think it really helped her come up quickly. I only had to push through about 6 contractions.

When she arrived they could barely set her on my belly because the cord was so short. She swallowed so much fluid they had to take her right after they cut the cord. She was on oxygen for 3 hours and then they let her come feed and cleaned her off. Everything else was fine and she is beautiful, happy, and healthy. Overall things went really smoothly. I only needed three stiches, and they were all internal.

Don`t be afraid to voice your opinion to the nurses. Be proactive for what you want. Sometimes they just get into a routine and don`t think twice about what might help you progress and what is best for you. I hope all of your births go well. It will all be worth it when you get to hold your little bundle of joy!

Jared Tyler`s birthstory

On Monday July 5th, I was working on my last assignment to turn in for my summer class and contractions started.

1:30pm: I started timing the contractions and they were pretty strong and about 3-5 minutes apart. Since I was already 3cm dilated at my last appointment and had had 8 hours of contractions one night since then, I thought it was best to go into the hospital to get checked (since the doctor’s office was closed due to the holiday).

4:00pm We arrived at the hospital and I was 5cm and 75% effaced. At this point we called Lisa, Eric’s sister, to head down to the hospital because once you are 5cm you have to admit yourself to the hospital. The contractions at this point were still coming every 4 minutes but were not very strong at all. They got my IV hooked up because I had to have antibiotics since I was strep B positive.

7:00 The contractions were still consistently 4 minutes apart but were not strong at all. I could still talk, laugh, and eat through all of them. At this point the IV was hurting me more than the contractions. The nurse checked me and I was 7cm and 80% effaced. It was very different for me this time around because from 5cm on with Mallory the contractions were very intense, so to be 7cm without any pain yet was a bit baffling to me. The baby was still posterior so they had me do a lot of leaning over a ball and hands and knees stuff to get him turned.

9:30 The contractions were really dying off and I had not made any progress since they had checked at 7. I did however get really nauseated, tired, and shaky for about 30 minutes and then it went away.

9:50pm They called the doctor in and broke my water. He immediately dropped down and the contractions got really intense. I got in the bathtub and it helped tremendously. Although they were intense, I only felt sick once, and with Mallory it was with every contraction.

9:50-12:01 There was not a clock in the bathroom so I don’t have the exact timing, but the contractions intensely continued until I began to push. Through the contractions I was leaning forward but the moment I started to push they made me turn around so the doctor could see when the baby was coming. About halfway through the second push the doctor checked and I wasn’t fully dilated- so he manually did it- yes, one of the most painful things ever. I continued to push (then got a little speech from the doctor about how I was preventing the pushing because I was afraid– didn’t really understand that one but kept on doing what I was doing) and after about 6-10 pushes he was out. After his head was out the doctor wanted his shoulders out immediately so I had to push one last time without a contraction. They took him out and set him on my chest and we stayed there until they cut the cord. Again, I had a short cord, but this one was at least long enough to place him on my chest out of the water.

12:01am From here on out they moved me to the bed to deliver the placenta. Then they push on your belly to get everything else out. This part is extremely painful, especially after what you have just gone through. The best part of everything was there wasn’t any tearing, which I truly believe was due to the water birth because he was a very large baby, much bigger than Mallory. Overall this was a completely different experience than the last time, and I couldn’t have asked for things to go any smoother.
