Camryn`s birthstory
We had our last doctor`s appointment on Wed, March 12 and during the office visit my OB expressed some concerns that the amniotic fluid level was borderline and my placenta looked `mature`. She did a non stress test and little Camry was sleeping and therefore her heart rate didn`t vary like they like to see.....these three things combined added to the fact that I was having regular contrations every 4-5 minutes (but not very painful and with no change to my 2 cm dilation) gave her the idea to go ahead and augment my labor and they sent us home to get a few things and then head to the hospital.
So after checking in, there was nothing but waiting....waiting to get into a triage room, waiting for the doc on call to see us...hoping that my contractions would actually become more painful on their own..... After about 3 hours the nurse noticed that Camryn`s heart rate would decelerate after the contraction (not a good sign for placenta well-being) and then things started to happen. They took blood, I got an IV, saw the on call doc and was whisked off to the L&D suite. Luckily the decelerations stopped and she looked healthy and happy from then on, but the IV fluid onslaught began!
They decided to go ahead and ripen my cervix with Cytotec and the first one was given to me at around 10 pm, after they allowed me to have dinner (my only meal since a 7 am cereal). By 3 am, I was in active labor with painful contractions occurring every 3 minutes and I could not sleep!!! At 8 am a new oncall physician checked me and found I was still 3, but the cervix was about 90% effaced and they started pitocin. By 10:30, I could not take the pain and was 4 cm and given an epidural. Boy...the relief! Things seem to happen pretty quickly from there, I progressed to 8 and then 9 cm within the next 4 hours, but got stuck at 9 cm for 2 hours.....clearly a sign. Throughout the pregnancy, they warned me that she was on the large side (weighing 7 1/2 pounds at the 36 week ultrasound). By 6 pm, my own doc came in and declared that I was fully dilated, but she was only at 0 station, so `let`s just see if pushing can bring her down some more`.....but it didn`t. Thank God she put an end to that after about 30 minutes and just booked an OR. Once in the OR, she was born within 9 minutes. The only downside to my labor process would have to be the fact that over the day and a half I got about 9 liters of fluid...now my feet and legs are the size of elephants!
After all is said and done, we are so blessed and proud to be her parents. Every day is a new discovery and many smiles (and sometimes tears)......Take care!
