Grace-Eva`s birthstory
I went to the dr. on Dec. 4th and I was 3cm. She stripped my membranes and we scheduled an induction for Friday the 7th. When I left, I jokingly said, “I hope I have this baby anytime except tonight because my husband will be out snowplowing.” Got home and felt a little sore. Went to bed and woke up an hour later with what felt like contractions. I started to panic because the snow was really coming down and I was home alone with my toddler son asleep. I started to time the contractions and they were 4 minutes apart. Called the birthing center and my dr., they both said I better come in. I tested positive for GBS and they wanted to make sure I was there for both doses of antibiotics. Called my husband and my parents. My dad came over and got me at 12:30 and we drove 45 minutes to the hospital in the snow. The highway was only one lane with the snow coming down. They got me settled in, told me I was 4cm but in early labor and we would see how things went. Once I was there, the contractions slowed a bit. I walked around and when I got back they were coming stronger. It was all back labor which was horrible. Finally, about 3 hours after arriving, my water broke. I was standing up during a contraction and it broke just like in the movies. And all over my brand new slippers! They said “I guess were keeping you.” This was 4:30. Now things moved quickly. I asked for an epidural at about 5:30am. I was almost 5cm. They told me someone was before me, so it would be 20-30 minutes. Once it was time to insert it, she could not find the right spot. I was bent over, having contractions for 30 minutes while she tried to get it in. I have 9 puncture spots and a huge bruise on my back from it. She said it was the hardest one she had ever done because my space was so low on my back. The nurse later told me she had never seen anything like it before. They kept telling me to hold perfectly still and don’t move while I’m trying to get through contractions. When she finally got it in, I was 7cm and it was about 6:30. From this point, things were smooth sailing. I could feel pressure but no pain, I could also still feel my legs and feet which was great. If I had to do it over again, I would have asked for an epidural when the first hard contractions hit. If you’re going to go through the hassle of having it inserted, it would be nice to have it as early as possible and enjoy it. At 8:15, it was time to push. I pushed about 4 times and she was out. They cleaned her, weighed her and got her all ready right in my room. My biggest regret is that I completely forgot about getting my video recorder out to tape it. She was 7lbs. 11oz and 19 ½ inches long. We named her Grace Eva and she’s just a doll. She sleeps like a charm and only wakes up once each night for a feeding. Her brother has been a big help. I’m still having some back pain, but otherwise things are going really well. It’s only been six days since having her, yet it seems so long ago. It’s really true what they say about forgetting the pain once the baby is in your arms. They are truly a blessing!!
