Oniyah`s birthstory
My Birth Story
Thursday, October 29, 2009 I went to South Suburban Hospital in Hazel Crest, Il at approximately 8:30am to have my labor induced.
I was almost 41 weeks along and I was already 5 days past my due date. The night before I had been having some rough contractions from 11pm til about 5 am. I was supposed to
go to the hospital at 6:30am but I decided it was too early. Plus I was already contracting and I really wanted to go into labor on my own. The morning of, I went to my room in the labor and delivery wing with my fiance and
signed a few papers. Privacy notices, consent to medical attention, etc. T
The nurses came in the room and hooked me up to monitor the baby`s heartbeat and my contractions. Baby was fine and I was contracting a little.
I asked what would happen once they gave me the Pitocin and how long I would have to wait for an epidural. I was hooked up to an IV and the pitocin drip began after my cervix
was checked by the doctor. At this time Dr. Hass told me I was 5cm dialated and I was surprised. It was good to know I wasn`t having all those contractions for nothing the night before.
She checked the monitor and I guess she observed that I was contracting. She looked at me with a confused face and asked if I was feeling the contractions that were obviously showing on the monitor.
I simply said no, not at all.
Just a little pressure in the vaginal area but no pain. I remember one of the student nurses saying, `Wow, you are a superwoman.` The
dr then broke my water bag and it was a big warm gush of fluid and blood. I really wasn`t feeling contractions at that moment, nothing at all except for the baby moving. Well
the pitocin started to kick in and needless to say the contractions were closer together and more painful. I was ready for the epidural so the nurse notified the anesthesiologist and told me he`d be on his way. I
think I was in pain for like 20 minutes and that was because the IV fluids needed time to go through my system. During this time I started shaking like I was cold.
Next thing I knew, I was feeling nauseous and I had to throw up. I guess should say that I was having my own contractions as the Pitocin kicked in and so I really
started to hurt. The weird thing though is that the contractions felt just like the menstrual cramps I`d been having for all these years.
Which wasn`t terrible because at least the pain wasn`t foreign to me. Well the anesthesiologist came and prepped me for the epidural.
I had to bend over, shoulders slouched and relaxed, back arched towards the dr, with my palms face down on my knees. I had to hold that position and not move as the anesthesiologist
located the place to stick the needle that would numb the area. I hadn`t looked at all of his tools so I didn`t know what the needle looked
like, even though I knew it would be a long one. Honestly getting the epidural wasn`t bad at all, not even painful. There was a prick when
I was poked with the needle but that was it. My tattoo hurt worse than that. After the area was numbed a catheter was fed into a 1mm space
where there would be continuous pain medicine. The medicine took about 10 minutes to kick in. Dr. Hass checked my cervix again and I was
9cm dialated! Woohoo, time to push! I couldn`t believe how fast everything happened. Unfortunately I had to throw up again right before I started
pushing and that made me weak. I guess I started pushing at about 12pm noon.
Ontez was holding one leg, the nurse was holding the other and my mother was standing up watching. Due to the epidural I didn`t feel
any pain at all, I barely felt any pressure down there. It was kinda difficult pushing because I couldn`t feel anything. I took a deep breath, held
it for 10 seconds and pushed as hard as I could (meanwhile not feeling anything, lol). The baby`s head was close to coming out but I did not have enough
strength to push her all the way out on my own. I was determined to have a vaginal birth, though, so I kept on trying. The nurses and dr were all
saying, `Push, push, push, good, good, you`re doing great, baby`s head is right there!` I was focusing on just getting her out because pushing
is very tiring and I was losing wind! Well after pushing for about 10 minutes the dr had to give me an episiotomy because I couldn`t
push the baby out. I didn`t feel when I got cut and the next thing I knew out popped the baby! I didn`t even feel her come out! It was a
wild and crazy experience. The dr let me touch Oniyah as soon as she camed out and I cried; I was so happy that she was finally here! She
was born at 12:30pm.
The baby was cleaned up and put under heat lamps because her temperature was too low. The good thing is she was in the room with us
the whole time. Oh yeah. I forgot to mention that her dad was looking kinda faint while holding my leg, which was heavy and numb. I remember
asking at one point if he wanted to sit down, haha. He was a trooper though and was there during the whole delivery. Shortly after
my dad came in the room with his camcorder and the fiance took some pictures. The dr had to sew me up and oddly enough I felt when
she was giving me stitches, ouch! I remember feeling the placenta come out and they started massaging my stomach to make sure everything
was out and help my uterus start moving down. Boy, was that painful. Nurses were doing that all night. I was done being sewn up, the dr congratulated me and shook my hand.
Later on the anesthesiologist came back to remove the epidural catheter and everything was over; baby Oniyah had
arrived. My what a journey this pregnancy had been and finally the moment we had all been waiting for!
Later I was moved
to recovery and we stayed there overnight. The food was pretty good, the baby was great. She was awake all day and slept through the night,
except for a few times I had to get up to feed and change her. I had a massage the next morning and the baby had some pictures
taken. My doctor (Dr. Ochoa) came in and gave me some instructions, squeezed my stomach, lol. The pediatrician came in and asked if I were
breastfeeding, when to come to his office, etc. After all of that, we were discharged. We left
the hospital at about 5:15pm on Friday, October 30, 2009. Those were a long two days and that is my birth story.
