Jens`s birthstory
So, this little guy really let us waiting for him! At 42 weeks, on Friday July 18th I was admitted to the hospital for induction. The gel for softening the cervix was applied 2 times -- in the morning and around 1 pm. In the meantime we were waiting for the cervix to soften and labor to start... During the waiting time we walked outside, relaxed and took a good lunch. Couple of times I was under monitoring machine, but they kept it as short as possible to allow me move around and feel comfortable. Also the number of internal checks was minimised which I was very happy with. I started to have very mild contractions, but they were similar to my false labor couple of days ago. The cramps were non-productive and not very strong. Around 5 pm the midwife did another interenal examination and there were no changes to my cervix! Nothing. No development (everything 0), no signs of starting the labor myself. However, they decided to wait overnight and do the hormone infusion (oxi something...) the next day. And suddenly, only 1 hour later, after being completely sure that this day nothing will happen, I started the labor! It all started with heavy shivering like I was in North Pole without anything on. I said I need a hot bath. And then it really started. So I received my contractions in the hot bath (oh, what a relief!). Actually, it turned out to be like one big contraction without almost any breathing time inbetween. I believe its called rapid birth. The pain was brutal, really rough. But I think that if I would not have been in the bath, it would have been even worse. Maybe my body told me with this shivering cold, that `girl, go to the bath, you will need it` :) :) After 3 hours, I got an examination (in bath) and was dilated to 8! I got the urge to push and there I was in bath with one big contraction. They said I have to go out because they dont do water births. And of corse, I never thought I would do a water birth myself... there all the planning goes :) Anyway, at that moment, when I had to go out of bath I couldnt imagine how I could walk. Like I said, it was a rapid thing and I didnt have any time inbetween the contractions... I dont remember how I got to the table. And then, completely dialated I suddenly, right before the pushing got a breathing moment! It was probably couple of minutes, but it felt like a lifetime and I was so very thankful for that! It gave me new energy to go further. Then I started pushing. The coaching of my midwife was perfect. Wow she was a very directive one. But very convincing, so I completely trusted her. She observed my first push which I did myself as it came. Then she said `girl, if you continue to push like that, it will take at least an hour if not two, and you will loose all the power you just gained...`. It paid off to listen to her, as we ended up doing it within 20 minutes. She used a special breathing technique to take most out of every pushing contraction. After being in the hot water for hours, all my inner and outer parts were also somehow very stretchy. I still got a tear as his head was 39 (!!) cm. But no pain relief whatsoever (besides hot bath :) This really feels extraordinary for such a wimp like myself! :) :)
I owe deepest thanks to my boyfriend who helped me through the pain in the bath, and the midwife who helped me to push and get my baby successfully to the world.
Holding him on my breast for the first time, having the first eye contact... Meeting Jens is the most magnificent moment of my life, I will never forget it.
