Birth Story

Ok so it mainly starts on the 10th of May 08. It was my birthday and i was nierly 36 weeks pregnant.

I had been having mild contractions on and off for a few days but nothing major. We all went for lunch with the family for my birthday on the saturday the 10th of may. It was a disaster! My sister crashed my mums car, my mum had a cold, Van was tired and I just felt like crap!

Anyways that night the contractions were still very mild but started coming every 3 minutes. I called the hospital and they said it would be best to come in and get checked.. just incase. So we headed off to the hospital kinda excited to see what will happen! They monitored me for a few hours and checked my cervix. I had dialated to 2cm's. Wich they said didnt mean much.. I could stay 2cm's for another 4 weeks even. So I got some panadol and sent home.

Spent the sunday resting cause I had work on monday (12th of May). I had planned to finish work on tuesday, So I went to work on Monday. I was still having the contractions but they were very mild and as they said it could go on for another 4 weeks so I thought I might as well finish up at work. I started to feel tired and over it so asked if I can go home after everyone had their lunch breaks. Went home and rested.. probly ate some chocolate and watched dvd's :)

I actually had a good sleep but woke up at 4:20am (13th of May) to go to the toilet. Being pregnant this wasnt uncommon..I was always up to pee. I could do it with my eyes still closed! Anyway I layed back down in bed..but it felt like I peed again..but didnt i just go.. maybe i didnt totally empty my bladder...there is alot of pressure going on down there..aggghhh!?!? I just peed the bed?!? OMG was it my waters? I had read somewhere that if you stand up the babys head acts like a stopper..but when u lay down again more fluid will come out. So I put a towl down and layed back down to see what happened...5mins later.. I just felt like a fool so got up again...I think more fluid is comein out..I dunno!?!Not wanting to wake Van up saying "Umm I just pissed the bed!" , I went to the kitchen to call the hospital and see what they think!... "Is the fluid clear...Yeh" "Does it smell like urine?..No" "We think you should come in".

In the mean time Van woke up and heard me on the phone. We got excited!! Luckily I had packed a bag just incase. I was hungry and didnt know when i would get to eat again ..so I had a cup of tea and some vegemite on toast and we headed of to the hospital!

We got to the hospital about 6-6.30am. They put me on a monitor and worked out yes it was my waters that broke. By now the contractions where getting pritty nasty. But they just said to stand up, move around and breathe through them. It wasnt till about 8.30 they finaly checked how much dilated i was..3cms. Doh.. is that all..So they left me for a little bit longer...I dunno what was happening..But I was starting to get REALLY uncomfortable. I couldnt help it but i was starting to make noises.. not yelling.. but getting close to it!! I asked for pain relief and they said it was too early..but they will run me a bath to soak in..Yeh whatever.. just do something with me!!! I was still in the damn assesment area..with other women having their appointments ect.. and now i really started to yell! I couldnt help it.. it just came out. I think I was freaking all the other people there out so they said ok we will move you now. Befor they moved me a dr came in and tried to put a tap thing in my arm realy for a drip for when i have an epidural..but i have reallt bad veins and she couldnt get it in. So they left it for the time being.

It was now about 9:25am and they walked to to the birthing room.On the way we heard another lady screaming her head off..wich totaly freaked van out..i couldnt care less..i was in my own world of pain!! I was in soooo much pain by now..I had to stop through each contraction. I could feel myself shakeing and could feel the urge to push. The midwife could hear it and told me NO its not time.. just breathe faster through the contractions. I did as i was told but felt sooo ready to push!

So we get to the room..I looked at the clock above my head and it was 9:30am.The midwife checked me and i was 10cm's!! Ready to push... I told ya so! She was freaked how fast i had progressed and wasnt ready. I asked for pain relief now but she said its too late! What!!! Noooooo?!?! She said "Charlotte...by 10 you will be holding your baby in your arms! you can do it!" I had to start pushing!

The first push wasnt with all my mite... I was hesitant! I didnt wanna do it without pain releif. Then the midwife told me the baby was getting tired and i had to do some big pushes. So I pushed as hard as i could with the next contraction..and it actually felt really good. I then felt the head come out. It was the wierdest feeling..a hard head that was all warm.Omg.. its actually happening! My next contraction came and once again i pushed as hard as i could...

Amelia Rose Fouche was born!!! It was 9:41am 13th of May 2008.

Was one quick birth thats for sure!! I cant believe I did it without pain releif..i didnt even have a panadol! But i did it and Amelia was there! Van cut the cord and she was placed on my chest. It was amazing. Something i will never forget. I went and had a shower..awww it was sooo good to be able to walk around straight away.Was glad i didnt have an epidural.

After the birth I was on a high like you would not believe, so happy to finaly have my little girl in my arms.

Zachary`s birthstory

On Wednesday the 25th of May at about 11:20pm, I was in bed and just about to fall asleep. Then I felt a gush! A BIG gush! Ohhhhhhhh here we go! I shot up out of bed yelling `MY WATERS JUST BROKE!` and as I headed to the toilet even more water flooded to the floor. It was insane. With my daughter it was just a trickle so even when I was in labour we werent sure if it was my waters or not...but this time there was no questioning.
My husband called my mum to come look after Amelia. I ran around frantic trying to find something to wear...I knew we had to move quick, as Amelia was born within 5 hours of my waters breaking. So we knew this one would probally come even faster.
We made it to the hospital aboue 12am. Went and got assesed and found out I was at 3cms, wich was great to hear cause I hadnt had any contractions start until we were nearly at the hospital..well appart from the bunch of braxton hicks for a whole month before!
The midwife asked what kind of pain relief I was wanting to get and I told her none..But I would like to labour in a bath or shower. She was a bit excited by this and told me she will get a bath ready now..sweeeeet :)
While waiting for the bath to fill we timed the contractions and they were speeding up pretty much each time. They kept getting closer and closer. Got in the bath and it was soooooooo good. It was big and the water was nice and hot! By now the contactions are really starting to pick up and I found myself breathing and even moaning through them.
About 2:30am I had enough of the bath.. I just couldnt get comfortable anymore so we headed to our birthing room.
Things REALLY pick up by now..I still couldnt get comfy but I ended up on the bed on all fours. The head end of the bed raised up and I was holding onto it for dear life!
The midwife wanted to see how baby was doing so put on a monitor around my belly. We could see his heart rate was starting to go a bit low with each contraction. She mentioned we might have to put an IV in my hand to give me some fluids.
This made me annoyed as I wanted no interventions and thoughts of ending up having a csection ran through my head. I told myself to calm down and everything will be fine..Also got my husband to give me water, water and more water!!
After a few contractions his heart rate started to pick up again :) So no needles needed.
At the same time I was starting to struggle. The pain was intense and the contractions started to get pushy.
The midwife told me if I need to push, then push. Just go gently to allow myself to stretch.
With the next contraction I started to push..and YELL!! I found out after that my husband had the camera recording.. and has this all on camera..its pretty funny the noises I made..
I think I did about 5 pushes. By now it hurt to push, but it also hurt not to push. So I just went for it...And out came my son Zachary!
He had the cord around his neck, but it was a very long cord so he was fine..thats probly what was making his heart rate go down during the conractions..
I had asked for delayed clamping of the umbilical cord, so he was passed through my legs and we had our first cuddle. It was AMAZING!
Such a positive birth experience.
