Original due date: Sept 10, 2008
Special: I'm a twin!
Type of delivery: Vaginal (with pain relief)
Duration of labor: 2 1/2 hours
Weight @ birth: 5 lbs 11 oz
Length @ birth: 19 inches
The hospital called and told us to head in around 9:30. When we got there it took a while to check in and they monitored the babies for a while and then we just waited for the doctor. I had been 4 cm dialated for 3 weeks and was having contractions 6-10 minutes apart for longer than 3 weeks so the doctors were pretty confidant that it was going to be quick once they got it all going. At 1:37 they broke my water and about 1/2 an hour later my contractions were coming about 3-4 minutes apart but were very mild. They sighted me for an epidural, which means they put it in place but didn't medicate it as I had asked them not to because I wanted things to get moving first and knew I would ask for the pain meds once I needed it. The contractions were stronger than the ones I had been having for weeks but still not much pain. They decided to start pitocin but started off with very little and within 10 minutes the contractions were getting more intense and coming about 2-3 minutes apart. They kept telling me to get the epi meds but I refused as I was sucking back the gas (I like it LOL) and knew I didn't want it until I couldn't stand the pian. They checked me shortly after starting the pitocin and I had progressed to 5 cm. I rapidly started to feel pressure so they kept checking me and I was 8 cm within 45 minutes of getting the pitocin. I started to scream around 3:15 for the epidural, as my contractions were very intense and getting extremely painful. They checked me and I was 9.5 cm dialated - WOOHOO! I was so happy and the aneshtetist was there within minutes medicating the epi just in time to push! Abbey was born shortly after at 3:39 p.m. weighing 5 lbs 11 oz. They did give me a small episiotomoy as I had had one with my son and Abbey kept getting caught on it as it wouldn't stretch from the scar tissue. She was taken immediately by the resuscitation team as they were only 36 weeks and due to all the problems we had had they were taking no chances. Unfortunately she did not breath on her own right away and needed to be bagged. Her 1 min. apgar was only a 4. But she soon did well and her 5 min. apgar was 9 and there were no problems.
I still had to deliver Charley and the doctors were getting worried she may turn but she didn't! They were very worried about her turning because she is bigger than Abbey and it is ok to deliver the 2nd twin breech if they are smaller than the first or the same size. She was taking a while though and the doctor kept having to reach in because she kept twisting. Her head would be facing my hip, then my back then the front and it was making it very difficult for her to come through my pelvis. The doctor soon realized she was chinup instead of chin down and was not going to make it past my pelvic bone. They ended up getting her out by vaacum. She was born at 4:04 pm weighing 6 lbs 4 oz. The whole labor was less than 2.5 hours WOOHOO! Charley's first apgar score was 8 and her second was 9 but it turned out she had some fluid on her lungs and needed to spend a couple of days in the Intermediate Care Nursery as she needed an IV until the fluid cleared. I only saw her for second before they took her away but got to hold her sister for a while before they took her too. I didn't actually see Charley until much later that night and didn't get to hold her until the next day. That was hard but they are all fine now and happy and healthy little girls!
