Gregory-Thomas`s birthstory
Saturday the 13th of June was wonderful, I went shopping, bought a new dining room table, went to Kohls, and spent some quality time with my husband and mother. I wasn`t having any contractions at all, my ob appointment from friday showed me at 4cm and 80% effaced but the lack of any BH or contractions had me worried... I felt like I was going to be pregnant forever. Around 10 pm I got up to go to my kitchen and felt a gush of liquid that just kept on coming. I continued walking around because I wasn`t sure if I had peed or my water had broken. After checking my undies and still being unsure if my water had broken because the gush of liquid had stopped, I sat around with my hubby waiting to see if anything would happen. Around 10:30 pm I started to feel intense contractions...they were a bit of a surprise to one who had never felt a contraction before. I went through Hypnobirthing and had practiced the breathing and the prompts, but nothing could prepare me for what I felt. For about an hour and a half I labored at home, I eventually gave up and told my husband that we were going to go to the hospital.
The contractions were still really strong and my husband dropped me off at the entrance to allow me to hurry ahead and check in while he parked. I could barely speak because the contractions were very strong and I was admitted very quickly. My nurse triaged me and told me I was a 6.5cm. I knew that I wanted some sort of pain relief, but really didn`t want to get the epidural at first because I hate needles... it was my lucky day because it took 4 nurses 45 minutes to get an IV in me. By that time I was seriously unhappy and was considering the epidural. It was interesting to watch the contraction monitor because I couldn`t feel any of the beginning or end of the contractions, just the intense peaks...I was lucky because it was less pain, but I could never prepare myself for the contractions to start. My first nurse told me she would give me a narcotic pain reliever (starts with an F), but she couldn`t give it to me once I progressed past 7-8cm as to not put stress on the baby. I told her I wanted an epidural, but she still gave me one dose of the drug to tide me over until the anesthesiologist could come. I felt so loopy and drugged and I knew that I couldn`t think straight, my husband said it was pretty amusing. The anesthesiologist came really quickly and put an epidural straight into me very quickly. It was wonderful. By about 3:50am on the 14th I had reached 10cm, but my nurses told me to wait an hour to start pushing to allow the baby to come down a little on his own. By 5:00 I wanted to start pushing so I could meet my little boy, but the lady in the room next to me was being life lighted to SLC with her baby, so all of the nurses were helping with that situation. By 5:45 I was allowed to start pushing and everything went well for half an hour until he got stuck under my pubic bone. I continued pushing until 7:30 and I was exhausted. My nurse went and got the ob on call (my ob was out for the weekend) and requested a vacuum to help the little guy out. The ob hooked up the vacuum to my little guys head and after 10 minutes had his head out from underneath my pubic bone. :) It only took me 15 minutes to push his head and the rest of his body out. He was such a conehead, his head just kept on coming and coming and we were shocked once he came out. I was told my baby wouldn`t be bigger than 7.5-8 lb at most, but he tipped the scales at 9 lb 2.5 oz and 21 inches long! He has a ton of butterscotch colored hair and slate blue eyes (which are subject to change). He had become my little angel and my joy. I didn`t know how much I would love him, but everyday my heart gets bigger and bigger.
I tore to the second degree, but other than that I have had a great recovery. Greg has had some problems with blood sugar, but with some SNS feeding and my oh so fun engorgement, we are trying to get through. He was also very jaundiced, so we have a light system for him in our house. I am so excited to be a mommy and I love him so much! I couldn`t be happier. :)

Birth details
Original due date: October 5, 2011
Type of delivery: Vaginal (with pain relief)
Duration of labor: 5 hours
Weight @ birth: 7 lb 12 oz
Length @ birth: 20 in
Around 11:40 pm on a Sunday evening I was walking back from my kitchen after getting some tums when I felt a nice long trickle. Having /just/ gone to the bathroom and after trying some kegals to stop the flow, I determined that my water had probably broken. Because my water broke with my firstborn, I figured I would lie down in bed and wait for the contractions to start. I dozed on and off until about 2:00 am when I figured that I would go to the hospital to determine if my water had broken or if I had actually just peed. My swab had cultured group G strep and I had been told not to wait too long before going to the hospital because I would need some penicillin. I left my husband snoozing in bed (no point in dragging him in if I had peed) and drove the whole 5 minutes to my hospital. After checking in, being triaged (I was at a 3cm and 90% effaced to start), the nurse did two pH tests with some pH paper. The paper didn't change colors. My heart dropped a little bit because I was dang sure that my water had broken. I wasn't leaking fluid at all, even when the nurse checked my cervix, so the nurse did a swab and sent it to the lab to test for amniotic fluid.
My husband was still snoozing at this point and I was very glad. I left home at 2:22 am and the results from the swab did not come back from the lab until around 4:30 am. I didn't even know the results until some one came in giving me paperwork to sign and told me that I was being officially checked in. I was rather surprised and asked the results, she said they were positive. :) The contractions had still not started at this point, so after being poked for an IV (it only took 1 poke), given some fluid and a bag of penicillin, we determined the best route would be for a low dose of Pitocin to start my contractions . I had been keeping my hubby updated about my status and told him that I would call him before they started the Pitocin because I didn't want him /not/ to be there for my labor. He actually showed up just as my first bag of antibiotics emptied. Apparently he couldn't sleep after I told him the lab results so he took a shower and got my SIL to give him a ride to the hospital.
The Pitocin was started somewhere around 5 and boy was it uncomfortable. I started the process entertaining the thought of going natural, but I was a pansy. I went from 3-5 cm without any pain medication, but I requested an epidural because I really don't like being in pain. I had to wait a little for the anestesiologist to start his shift at 7:00 am. He showed up right at 7:00 am and had the epidural in no problem. My left leg went numb really quickly, but my right leg took longer. It never actually went completely numb, which came in handy later on. I could still lift my right leg and move both of my feet which felt novel because with my first son I was numbed up to my sternum and couldn't move anything for a good 2 hours after birth.
Between around 8:15 and 8:50 I went from a 6 to a 10. I was asked to give a practice push to see if I remembered how to push and moved my baby down about 2 cm in a single push. I wasn't sure how the pushing was going to go because when I checked in his head wasn't engaged. His head was engaged before I started pushing, but I was still afraid I would have to push for 2 hours like I did with my first son. At that point my OB was called. I was really excited earlier on because my OB was the on call OB overnight, but by the time I was ready to push she was supposed to be seeing patients. I apologize to the person who had to wait to see her for their morning appointment. :)
My OB came in the room and suited up. My hubby also suited up because he wanted to catch the baby. It was pretty funny to watch him try to get into the sterile clothes and gloves...apparently it's a lot harder than it looks. I could still feel pressure with the contractions (slight and not painful) and started to push. I could feel my OB pulling on my perineal area, which was not comfortable, but helped me to focus my pushing. In three (or maybe four pushes, I can't remember) my baby boy was born covered in a nice slimy layer of vernix. My hubby caught him and the doctor and nurses helped place him right on my chest where they started toweling him off. He was so beautiful. For the last month of pregnancy all I wanted was to hold my little boy and it was the most amazing moment to finally hold him in my arms. Rowan was born at 9:16 am and weighed a tiny 7 lb 12 oz. He was super calm from the moment he came out and totally loved having him apgar test preformed under the heated testing station. I only tore to the first degree (the recovery is so much easier than a second degree). Rowan has been in the family for a week and a day now and he is the most precious, sleepy, snuggly little boy imaginable. He is an amazing addition to my family.
