When I went to my dr's appt on Friday 2/20 I was still only dilated to a 1. My doctor was estimating the baby to be close to 8 lbs so she scheduled me to go get the gel on my cervix on the following Tuesday 2/24. They actually use Prepadil at the hospital I went to instead of Cervidil so I was scheduled to go in at 7:30 am and then return at 1:30 pm for another application. She told me the gel would probably not put me into labor but just help my cervix to soften and start dilating. So on Tuesday I show up for the first application. It wasn't a big deal. I had to go to OB triage for the procedure so they could monitor the baby. After she applied the gel I had to lay there for an hour while they monitor. After I was done I went home and got some chores done (which was a good thing I did). I went back at 1:30 for the second application. Within minutes of the gel being inserted I started having contractions. They weren't very strong but they were a consistent 5 minutes apart. The nurse told me it was normal and that it was just my body responding to the gel. So I went home and continued to have contractions throughout the rest of the afternoon and evening. I didn't think much of it because the dr had told me the gel most likely wouldn't put me into labor. Through the course of the night the contractions got very strong and painful. On Wednesday morning around 7 am I told my husband that I thought I might be in labor and that we should go to the hospital. We got checked into triage and they checked my cervix- only dilated to a 1.5. I got really upset because I thought how could my contractions be so strong and I'm not dilated. They had me walk around the hospital for an hour (which sucked with the painful contractions) to see if I would dilate- nope not at all. They told me that my contractions were strong and that I was definitely in early labor but said that I was probably in for a long labor so they gave me the option of getting checked into the hospital now or going home and getting most of the labor out of the way in the comfort of my own bed. I chose to go home so they told me to come back when I couldn't stand the pain anymore. I told them I would be back in an hour. =) I got home and took 2 baths and 2 showers which helped so much! I actually stuck it out til about 4:30 pm when I couldn't take the pain anymore. We went back to the hospital and I was ready to punch somebody if they told me I wasn't dilated but luckily when they checked me I was at a 4. They took me straight up to my room and the epi dr was there within a half hour. Once I got the epi life was wonderful! I didn't feel a thing after that! Finally around 11 pm I was ready to push, only problem was my contractions slowed waaaaaaay down (about 8 mins apart) so they gave me some Pitocin and an hour and a half later my little angel was here! It really was a great experience for me. I feel so lucky. Its funny how fast I forgot about all the pain of the 9 hours of contractions. The dr's and nurses at my hospital were so wonderful. They made me feel like I was the only person there. It definitely makes it easier to think about doing it again (but not for a while!).
