When I was 26weeks, I was diagnosed with mild pre-eclampsia. I was put on bedrest for the remainder of my pregnancy and had to go to the Dr twice a week for checkups and ultrasounds to keep an eye on his bloodflow and growth. My PE never got any worse, but at 37.5 weeks, my OB wanted to either induce me or schedule a Csection. She told me that because I was only 37.5 weeks, that labor would take forever, and she did not want to stress me and the baby out. We agreed to schedule a Csection for the next day.
I was excited and a little nervous on the big day, and we took a final belly shot just before leaving for the hospital at a bright and early 5am!
We went to the Triage area where I was prepped, but my surgery was delayed an hour due to an emergency. Once they called me back, reality hit, and I got nervous, but kept calm. Brendan looked silly in his booties, and hair bonnet and cover suit! He had to sit outside as I went in the OR to be hooked up to all the monitors and received the spinal block. Because I have scoliosis and can't arch my back very well, it took them a little longer to get it going, and I could hear a crunching noise, where I guess they were going though cartlidge yuck! As soon as they got the spinal going they immediately helped me lie back down, as a spinal block is almost instant, compared to an epidural. It felt so strange as my legs went numb!
The procedure itself was easy, but it took my OB a bit of effort to get a hold of Sebastian, because he was sitting so high up in my belly. My whole pregnancy, most of my baby belly was ABOVE my belly button!! I was so nervous that all I could say is "get the camera ready", "make sure the camera is ready!" lol Once he was out, he had a VERY gurgly cry. I didn't think anything of it at the time.
When they showed him to me, I was in shock. I had no idea what I was looking at. This was a baby but who's baby was it? Definitely not mine! I couldn't even say anything to him, I just reached out and stroked his head and cheek. No tears, just shock.
They said something about he was going to the regular nursery but he needed a little oxygen as he's working hard to breathe. It didnt even compute, and Brendan left with them.
While I was in recovery I didn't see anyone. My mom stopped in for a second to check on me, but everyone was with the baby.
Once I got to my actual room, I still didn't see anyone. The nurse asked if my family was here, and I said "Well, they WERE". I called Brendan on his cell, just as he walked in. They told me that Sebastian was in the NICU because he was having a hard time breathing, but he should be ok.
Later on, he was eventually put on a ventilator because he was working so hard to breathe, that they didnt want him to tire out. He spent a total of 10 days in the NICU due to surfactant deficiency. They said that boys give them the hardest time when they're born even a little early.
We have waited so long for him, and have been through so much to finally have a family. He has been a dream come true! Even if he was colicky for a few weeks :)
