Henry-Louis`s birthstory
I woke up on the morning of the 30th feeling a little trickle and was in complete denial that it could be my water. I had been feeling contractions all night long but just kept falling back asleep, again in complete denial. I had my 37 week appointment at 10am that morning and told my doctor what happened. She did an ultrasound and confirmed that my fluid levels were low. She stepped out of the room so I could undress and while I was waiting for her to return the rest of my water broke. I couldn`t believe it was happening! I hadn`t even packed a single thing because I was convinced this baby was going to be late. I called my husband at work and told him I was going straight over to the hospital (thank God it`s only 2 minutes away from my doc`s office!). He went home and packed some things for us and waited for my mom to pick up our dog and then they came over to the hospital. I was having irregular contractions at that point but they were getting progressively more uncomfortable. My mom left a little while later and we spent the afternoon dealing with contractions and wondering about the little boy we were going to meet shortly. My doc ordered pitocin for me to get my contractions going since she wanted to get me delivered within a relatively short time since my water had broken. I asked for an epidural immediately because I was terrified of the contractions that I would have with the pitocin. I have to say the epidural was fantastic! I went from 2 cm to 10 cm in about 2 hours. My nurse was amazed. She had predicted that I would have the baby at around noon the following day but instead I started pushing at about 9:45 pm. It felt so good to finally be able to push. i felt like I was on the outside watching what was happening but not really processing that I was about to meet my baby. Well, that first hour turned into two and then three. My doc came to check me and said she really didn`t think there would be room enough for my baby to make it out and she was very worried that I would get the head delivered but that his shoulders would get stuck. She suggested that I have a c-section and I agreed. My epidural was beginning to wear off but the worst part was that while I was waiting to be transported to the operating room I wasn`t allowed to push and let me just say that that was the most excruciating experience of my life. I could feel all this pressure but I just had to endure it. I actually started crying out of frustration and pain and my poor husband felt so bad. The nurse felt worse and kept calling to try to get the transport speeded up. I finally made it to the OR but at that point I was feeling really sick and I couldn`t stop shaking. As soon as they wheeled me in I started vomiting uncontrollably. They gave me anti-nausea medication and pretty soon they kicked in. I got a boost to my epidural and my doc went to work getting my baby out. It only took about 10 minutes and when my doc brought out my baby I was allowed to look at him take his first breath and cry his first cry. He was and is absolutely gorgeous. Henry Louis was born at 2:01 am on the 31st of May weighing 6 pounds, 7 ounces and was 20.5 inches long. He screamed for a long time but once the nurse placed him in William`s arms and William began singing the song he had been singing to my belly, baby Henry instantly quieted down, content to be in his daddy`s arms at last. It took about another 25 minutes for my doc to stitch me back up and about 10 minutes in I started feeling pain again. I could literally feel them shoving my uterus back inside. Not a pleasant experience. I kept telling my doc that I was feeling pain so the anesthesiologist gave me some sort of shot and while it took the egde off the pain I could still feel some serious discomfort. I was in recovery for an hour and they kept Henry for 5 hours because he was early, small, and having a little trouble breathing. I was surprised at how small he was since I couldn`t push him out but apparently I have a small pelvis and there just wasn`t enough room for him. At about 7 am they finally brought him in and I`ve been in heaven since. He had a pretty bad bout of jaundice and lost a substantial amount of weight, getting down to 5 pounds 12 ounces. I had no choice but to supplement breast feeding with some formula and he`s been putting the weight back on like a champ. Oh, and the jaundice is under control after Henry had to spend a day under the ultraviolet lights. We`ve had him home for a few days now and we couldn`t be happier. He`s so beautiful and sweet and each day we look at him we see something new. He`s the perfect blend of us both and has little bits of his grandparents in him too. This journey has been at times worrying, exhausting, and exciting and now I can hold my little bundle of joy whenever I want and stare into his little face and tell him how much he`s loved.
