RILEY`s birthstory
21 April 2008 (Monday)
So, I went into the hospital (Talbot Ward) at 9am, Steve came with me as we had already taken Heather & Fraser into school, When we arrived I was taken to Bed 10 (Fraser being a Ben 10 fan thought this was cool), to cut a story short, the Labour Ward (Mary Celeste) was so busy I wasn’t induced on the Monday. As I settled down for the night, a nurse came and told me they were going to start me off, and that I had to move to a different (more private) bed, they put the baby heartbeat monitor on me at about 11.15pm.
22 April 2008 (Tuesday)
So the nurse came in at 00.45 to put the 1mg prostatin gel in me, and carried on monitoring me until about 1.55, after rushing to the toilet – well by then I was busting! I managed to have a bit of a sleep.
The nurse came back at 6.30 to put the monitor back on for an hour then let me know the consultant would be around in the morning to see me. He turned up nice and early at about 7.45 saw that I was only down for 1mg of prostatin (had at 00.45), so had a check and I was only 1-2cm dilated, told me someone will check again in four hours. He dropped my maternity notes back to me at 8.30am and left.
Not long after that I had to keep standing up, which was more comfortable for the contractions, which were coming every 1 minute or so, finally I was in LABOUR ……………………… They were trying to tell me I wasn’t (that happened in my second labour) because I was only 1-2cm, but I had to stand up every couple of minutes (that’s not an exaggeration), I was wearing my newly brought TENS machine, even though I wasn’t too sure how to use it, The Midwife wanted me to get up on the bed to see how far I had dilated, but I couldn’t as the contractions were coming thick and fast now, in the end someone admitted that I must be in labour (doh!) and that maybe I ought to go to the labour ward, and on top of that it would be quicker for me to walk there (into the next ward), I was having contraction every few seconds by now ( I told you the baby was coming lol) I had just got to the outside security doors of the labour ward when my waters broke. They had to false me into a wheelchair and almost had to hold me down (I wanted to get out of the wheelchair as I was uncomfortable sitting down) got me to the room and stop…. The room had to be prepared for me; I can honestly say I have never seen a hold load of midwives move so fast to clean a room.
So I finally get into the room and they want me up on the bed, I’m standing up holding onto the bed and the midwife is asking me to get on the bed, I tell her I will but at the moment I can’t, they tell me again to get up on the bed, I reply I will get up on the bed I just need to catch the right moment, the third time of telling me (this is all within seconds) they tell me again to get up on the bed and that’s when it happened …… I said I can’t as the head has just come out – panic stations – I’ve now got a midwife with her hand under the baby’s head trying to push me up on the bed (so baby doesn’t fall to the floor) – honestly if you saw this on TV you would think it’s a really funny comedy sketch. I managed to get up on the bed when my DAUGHTER decided to make an entrance, from the moment my waters broke to birth was less than 5 minutes.
I was given one stitch – but that was a never ending stitch!!! Baby was given vitamin K injection, then when it was possible, I was transferred to the postnatal ward. I was given all the paperwork I needed, (we have a 6hr rule, that is the minimum you need to stay in hospital before being allowed to be discharged), although as everything was fine with mother & daughter I was actually allowed to leave at 2.30pm (was going to surprise the kids picking them up from school, but decided against that!!!), I finally got home about 5pm.
I had rang Steve at 8.30am to let him know there was no rush and to come to the hospital when he was ready, I then rang him back at 9.20am to tell him to get Fraser into school straight away and get to the hospital as I was about to have the baby, He arrived just as the umbilical cord had been cut.
