Colton Johnathan is here! I went into the hospital Monday morning at 7am like I was scheduled to. I thought I might be having contractions, and sure enough when I got there they confirmed I was. They were not strong yet, but definitely there! Since I was already contracting on my own the doctor decided to let me go for a little while on my own to see what would happen. After a couple hours I hadn’t made any progress so the doctor decided to give me a pill to see if that helped any. I got the pill and then started walking for a while. After about 3 hours the nurse hooked me back up to the monitors to see how I was doing. The contractions were about every 4-5 minutes at this point, but still very weak. The doctor checked me again and I was still just 3cm- no progress. Finally at about 1pm the doctor decided to start the pitocin drip. By the time they got everything in it was about 1:30, and within minutes I was feeling strong contractions. I was very uncomfortable right away and wanted Anthony to hurry up and get there! He finally did arrive at about 3pm just when the contractions really started to hurt. I got in the tub after Anthony got there which was great but after about an hour I was ready to get out. I decided at that point I needed something for pain. I got something through my IV which didn’t really take the pain away, it basically just made me sleepy! As the nurse was giving it to me she said it would make me drowsy, and that’s the last I remember for about 2 hours. I guess that while I was sleeping the nurse came in and turned my pitocin up from 6 to 24 though, and that’s what woke me up. When I woke up I was in the worst pain of my life, but I was still so sleepy that I could barely open my eyes! I think I was crying, but honestly I’m not sure since I was really out at that point. After a couple hours of extreme pain Dr. Johnson came in to check where I was at. It was now about 9:30pm. I thought by that time I would be at least 7-8cm, but when she checked me I was at a whopping 4! She said she didn’t think I would deliver until morning sometime and that’s when I really started crying. I had been in labor for over 14 hours at that point, and had only gone from 3cm to 4cm and was expecting to be there the rest of the night. I asked for the epidural because I knew I wouldn’t last through the night in so much pain. Dr. Johnson came in to do the epidural and I have to say that was the most painful experience of my life. I thought the contractions were bad, but they were nothing compared to the epidural! Apparently I have no spaces between my vertebra which makes it very hard to get a huge needle in there. Well, she finally got it in which I was thankful for since the contractions were coming very hard and close together. After a few minutes my right side was numb, but unfortunately the epidural did not work right and I could still feel everything on my left side! Well about this time everyone decided to go home and get some sleep since I had been told it would be hours before I would deliver, so everyone left except Anthony and Abbey. Dr. Johnson came back in and started working with the epidural to try to make it work, and after about an hour she finally got my left side numb which felt so good! I was so relaxed that I thought for sure I would be able to get a good night sleep then deliver in the morning. Well right about that time I had an intense urge to push and so I told the nurse. She said ok, but didn’t do anything. Well the next contraction I felt the same way, so I told her again that I really felt like I wanted to push! After the 3rd time I told her that she called Dr. Johnson in to check me. Sure enough I was at 10cm and ready to go! I couldn’t believe it. It was about 11pm and I was ready to push my baby out. It took a few minutes to get everything set up and ready to go, and then I started pushing. Since I had the epidural I didn’t feel any pain, just pressure. The doctor told me to try to push 3 times with each contraction, and I managed to push 3-4 times with each. Apparently I am a great pusher, and at 11:40pm Colton Johnathan made his grand entrance into the world. He weighed 6 pounds 2 ounces and was 19 and ½ inches long. He is by far the cutest baby in the world and we couldn’t be happier.
