A. Harris' birth story
I delivered a healthy girl 5 weeks early! She looks exactly like my husband! We are so happy to finally be able to hold our special joy!!! BUT it wasn't that easy!!! I had been placed on strict bedrest since Feb. due to a low lying Placenta that was causing me to hemmorage and be hospitalized twice. I was advanced maternal age...40...I feel like I deserve an award:), and had gestational diabetes to top it all off. The bedrest was driving me crazy! And as I began to feel better I began to do a little more out of the bed each day...not a smart move. But the bedrest was like torture. on April 8th I begged my husband to take me to FRIDAY'S for dinner because I was craving their Jack Daniel's salmon and garlic mashed potatoes. I moaned in the car the entire way there. When we got there I could barely get out of the cat to go inside. once we finished our meal I could barely stand up to leave. I went to bed immediately when we got home. At around 4 am I was dreaming that I was having my period in bed, because I felt wet. I woke up and told my husband and he said let me look. Then he said I see something clear coming out of you. When I heard that I freaked out and tried to get out of bed fast. Before I could do that my husband says ' No wait it's not clear it's blood!" Then I get to the bathroom and sure enough a huge blood clot the size of a piece of liver drops out of me and all of this blood starts gushing out! This was my third experience with this happening and so we already had the hospital bag packed. We race to the hospital with me sitting on a towel so as not to ruin the car seat. I am praying the whole time that when we arrive and get put on the monitor there will be a heart beat, because I could not feel her moving around. Very scarry feeling!!!! The nurses and doctors tell me they see and hear a heart beat but that I am having contractions...I was 35 weeks and not wanting to have the baby yet. They have me take a pill to stop the contractions. It didn't work and so they gave me another pill, that didn't work either. Finally the doctor said that we would need an emergency c-section because if I dialated anymore than I would hemmorage and possibly die due to the placenta being right over my cervix. I told the doctor that I was not ready and he said Yes you are! I had never been in surgery before so I was soooo scarred, but brave for my baby. (My husband was happy because it would finally be over and the baby would be out, he was anxious to see and hold his first baby. I had a baby before but it was 15 years ago!!! and I was young and in better shape, so I had a vaginal full term birth with her.) I get the epidural which was crazy painful because the nurse was clueless and eventually had to have another nurse handle it. Then they asked if I could feel anything and began cutting me open. My husband was looking into my eyes and holding my hand and shortly after we heard the baby cry. Her cry sounded so familiar is the best way to describe it. My husband left my side to go and count fingers and toes. Our daughter was finally out of my body and in the world.
