Eden-Thomas-Nathaniel`s birthstory

My little bundle of joy was truly content in the womb, with no signs of ever wanting to leave. I`d been having painful pre labour pains for a week but they were irregular and not enough to kickstart labour.

At my 40 week obst appt I had a membrane sweep, which was thought may get things moving as I was 2cm dilated and nearly fully effaced, but I still begged my Doctor for an induction if nothing happend, this was scheduled for Friday the 6th of June at 7pm (making me 5 days overdue).

At 9pm after the paperwork was completed I had a V/E which showed I was still 2cm dilated, and nothing new was happening, so the Doctor inserteted the Cervidil.

After half an hour I began having very severe pain in my lower abdominal area, sort of like really bad period pain multiplied by a thousand :-) about 2am I was still in severe pain so I was checked over by a midwife who said that what was happening was an over stimulation of my cervix caused by the gel, she administered some pethidene which made the pain bareable and finally I got some sleep.

Around 7am Saturday morning I finally woke to find the pethidene had worn off and I was still having these awful pains due to the cervidil which was still in place. I was finally taken up to the birthing suite, for more pain relief (another shot of pethidene) and was attached to the machine to check for contractions..which werent even occuring, just the pain from the Cervidil .

I managed to doze off again after the pain relief, but woke a couple of hours later at 10am to a gush which was my waters breaking. I managed to have a shower and at 10.15am I was moved into the delivery suite where I was handed the gas after my first real contraction since the gel was applied. I sat on the ball for about 1/2 an hr but found it to uncomfortable due to the spd which came around week 14 of my pregnancy.

I was examined around 11ish as the contractions were now coming thick and fast and was already 6cm dilated, the contractions were coming thick and fast by now and with just the gas which was now my new best friend I suddenly had the urge to push .

My mum finally arrived, just as I bgan pushing. It was around now that my baby`s heart rate dropped dramatically and I was told that the baby had to be delivered `RIGHT NOW` my legs were placed into the stirrups as my baby had become stuck and the Doctor applied the ventouse to my baby`s head.

The first attempt with the ventouse failed as it popped off my babys head (leaving him with a few grazes which are now nearly healed) The Doctor then became very serious and said we really have to work and get this baby out and I was told to push like I`d never pushed before.

Finally with the Doctor pulling with the ventouse, me pushing and a midwife pushing down on my stomach from the top I felt my baby become dislodged and begin moving through the birth canal. His head was finally delivered, along with his hand!!!!! which resulted in an enormous tear, the doctor quickly performed an episiotomy, and then with one final push my beautiful baby boy was born.

Due to his distress he was very slow to breath, but the doctor allowed him onto my stomach for a brief second before whisking him over to the pediatrician who administered oxygen, and heat. When he was finally handed back to me he was still very cyanotic (blue) but was breathing fine and was quickly recovering from his ordeal.

After a labour lasting approximately 1hr and 45mins after my waters broke and finally began having contractions, My beautiful baby boy `Eden Thomas` was born he was a healthy 9pd 12oz, with a head circumference of 38cm and was 53.5cm long. And has the most beautiful silvery blonde hair and the lightest blue eyes I have ever seen in a baby.

I love him to pieces, and am relieved to be able to hold him in my arms!!!!
