Kateri-Kay`s birthstory

We found out baby was going to be big so we scheduled our c-section for 12/19 at 4pm. In the days before we were running around making sure we finished everything. My last day at work was 12/17.

On 12/19, the doctor called and asked if we wanted to delivered a hour earlier. We had everything ready so we packed up and headed to the hospital. We checked in around 1:30pm. By 2pm, I was in triage being prepped and trying to get my nerves in check. Even though I had read a million different articles and watched it a 100 times on TV, i didn`t know what to expect.

Once the doctor got there, things moved REALLY fast! My anesthesiologist set me up, when I started to feel the meds I was consumed by it because I was very disoriented. I wanted to remember everything. Its like the more I tried to focus on what everyone else was doing the more aware I was that I about to have a baby...and I was still awake! It didnt occur to me that I couldnt feel my legs until they docs were asking if I felt this or that. There were so many people talking at once that I didnt hear them when they were speaking to me. I could really only think about one thing, my breathing. Most of the time i felt and thought I was holding my breath.

It was like there was a countdown to when the procedure actually started. Brad came in and he sat next to me in his hair net and paper gown. I felt some tugging - that was weird. Then I heard the doctor say, `Dad, do you want to tell mom what it is?` Brad said, `Its a baby Girl, we have a Kateri Kay`. He left me to go with the nurse to take care of baby K. I laid there and wondered what she looked like, did she have lots of hair??. Her cries didn`t sound like the newborns on TV, she was much more mellow. Brad was going back and forth, checking on both of us. He came back to tell me `shes got a full set of teeth` :) That made me laugh. They both left to go to the nursery to clean up baby K and take her measurements. Her APGAR was 9.9 the 1st minute. Kateri Kay FireThunder was born on 12/19 at 3:27pm. 9lbs 6oz!! 21 inches long.

I don`t know how long I stayed in the OR. I was still concentrating on my breathing and asking questions about what was happening behind curtain number 1. After I was stitched up and waiting to be returned to triage, I reached down to feel my belly and my baby bump was gone. For the first time in months, I felt my ribs again! That was probably when it hit me - I`m a mommy...wheres my baby!?

I don`t remember much after that. I wasn`t able to feel or move my legs for the next 8 hours or so and was on strong meds for most of that time. Brad took care of us that first night. Up until then he had never held a baby or changed a diaper and now he`s a pro. We`ve spent hours looking at her and wondering, how in the world did you fit inside me?
