Adison-Clare`s birthstory
On Thursday, April 17th we had a regularly scheduled weekly appt. with growth ultrasound to check on our baby girl`s progress and be sure that she wasn`t going to be to big for my body to deliver. My delivery with my 1st child was rather traumatizing to my body with 20+ hours of induced labor, 2 1/2 hours of pushing, delivery by vacuum extractor and forceps which all together ended up leaving me with a 4th degree tear and lots of stitches. Needless to say, I wanted a better experience this time around so my doctor decided to approach this birth carefully. When she came in the room to review the ultrasound results with me and hubby I could see it in her eyes that she was dreading sharing the news with me. I simply looked at her and told her that I was okay with whatever she had to tell me so she proceeded to let us know that this little girl was estimated to weigh 9lbs 1oz and I was only 38 weeks 4days pregnant. Dr.`s concern was not so much her weight though as the size of her torso and shoulders, they were measuring 41 1/2 weeks and were preventing her from dropping appropriately into my pelvis. So basically I was stuck at 2 cm and 50% effaced. She explained my options thoroughly and discussed all possibilities before coming to the conclusion that a planned c-section was our best option. Once she explained the possibility of the baby getting stuck if I tried to deliver vaginally and she may end up with a broken collarbone or dislocated shoulder trying to be born, I was completely sold on the idea of whatever was safest and less traumatic for her and I both. So, she checked with the hospital and they happened to have an opening for the next morning at 7:30am. We spent the rest of the day preparing for our baby`s arrival and being SO excited that we would be seeing our baby girl within 24 hours. Friday morning, April 18th we arrived at the hospital at 5:30am, got registered and headed for pre-op. There they placed my IV, monitored baby, explained what was going to be happening and drew some pre-surgery labs to check blood levels. Then we simply waited. By 7am people were beginning to come in and out of the room and introducing themselves- 7:15 they took me back and hubby was to hang back to get dressed. Everyone was SO wonderful and took such good care of me that I never even got the slightest bit nervous or scared. They placed my spinal (which was amazingly simple and painless) and laid me down quickly. Being on my back caused me to get extremely nauseated and my bp dropped but once they got that taken care of I felt fine. Soon after that, they brought my husband in and sat him next to me and I was completely 100% content from that point on. I never really felt much of anything and my hubby kept me pretty distracted because he was really nervous until they would let him stand up and peek at what was happening. When he was finally allowed to look, he was giving me the `play by play` on what was happening. I did feel quite a bit of pressure in my chest when they were up and pushing on my belly to get her out but it was really temporary and right after that they dropped the drape and allowed me to see her. When i heard her cry for the 1st time it was the most unbelievable feeling and tears streamed from my eyes. At that moment, there was no comparison and I was the happiest girl in the world!! Of course they took her and cleaned her up and daddy got to go and be with her but I could hear everything that was going on- her cry was the most beautiful sound to my ears. I spent about 1 1/2 in recovery where my daughter and family were allowed to come and see me and I fed baby girl for the 1st time. We got in a room of our own by 10 or 10:30 and I finally got to try to get a little rest- I was feeling a little loopy at this point from all the medicine so I got a few in a few nice little naps here and there. She is now 4 days old and we are totally in love with our brand new bundle of joy! Daddy is a 1st time natural and has taken such good care of both of us and Adison is a wonderful baby who already only gets up twice a night to be fed. I am amazed at this humbling experience and just try to take in each and every moment!
