Savannah-Grace-Garza`s birthstory
Labor began at 9pm on thurs. (13th) with what I thought were bad cramps but turned into consistant stomach pains. I had back pain my entire pregnancy but not one contraction was felt in my back through the entire labor. I started out at 8 minutes apart from 9pm to 4am then the contractions jumped to 4 minutes for about 45 minutes and then to 1 minute apart. I called the hospital first because I just didn`t know if this was the real thing or not and didn`t want to wake everyone up just to be sent home.
I arrived at the hospital at about 6:00am and was checked, I was dialated to 5 centimeters. I was shocked! My last doctors appointment was the morning before and was not dialated at all. They told me I would have her by 12:00pm because most women dialate 1 centimeter an hour after they`ve reached 4 centimeters. They said I could have an epidural now and I said yes, why not? They told me the most painful part was over with. Contractions in a high and flat hospital bed were much harder to handle than my own bedroom were I could move around and not be self-conscience.
Anyways, I was admitted by signing a bunch of papers and asked a bunch of prego questions then given an IV which hurt, an epidural which wasn`t bad, blood drawn which wasn`t bad. Then I had a catherer which I didn`t feel by then because the epidural kicked in. I didn`t feel anymore contraction pains but still felt the contractions (felt like braxton hicks) with the epi until 3pm. I stopped dialating so they gave me small doeses of poticin and broke my water. I think the epi slowed my labor down but I`m not for sure.
I finally dialated to a 10 and could feel pressure in my butt cheeks. They finally had me start pushing at 4:30 even though I never felt the urge. I could feel every contraction from here on out and it hurt. I thought epi`s numbed every part of labor for some reason. I was so afraid to push because I didn`t want to poop so I don`t think I pushed correctly for quite awhile. I think this prolonged the pushing stage as I pushed for an hour and a half. I never did poop not until the next day! I soon realised that pushing through a contraction was less painful than just bearing through a contraction. The entire time I was pushing I didn`t feel like I was progressing but they said I was. Finally her head started coming out which felt to me like a severe buring sensation which I now know was me tearing. I wanted to give up but knew I couldn`t walk around the rest of my life with this babies head right there. So I started to pray to God for someone to say c-section but nobody did. So I beared down and pushed like hell and it hurt like hell. They screamed that her head was out so I gave one more push and the body came out which actually felt good. Then they pushed on my stomach and the placenta came out which also felt good but alittle weird. They pushed my stomach a few more times to get whatever else out and the stuff coming out felt fine but the pushing on my stomach bothered me alittle but nothing like the pain I just felt so I didn`t care.
The midwife then gave me 6 stiches and told me I tore upwards instead of down. So the actual stiching hurt bad and still stings alittle now. I don`t dare look at the stiches. The pain of labor did go away immediately after the head was out.
Her heart rate dropped several times into the 60`s during labor so they gave me an oxygen mask to help her heart rate which scared the crap out of me but she was born with an apgar score of 9 and then a 10. I was shocked!
About an hour after delivery I was drinking juice, had food ordered, got out of bed and went to the restroom without a problem. I had a very short attention span when listening to the nurses though. I had to have them repeat several things because I would just daze off.
Anyways, what I`m trying to say, atleast for me, is that some parts were very painful and very scary but EVERYTHING turned out better than expected. This is truely an amazing miracle but still in disbelief over the whole experience.
She weighed 6 lbs 12 oz and 20 inches long. She was born at 6:05pm.
