Yana Milena`s birthstory
I went into labor two days after her July 3rd due date. Suddenly at around 7 PM, I experienced this intense painful episode, which I thought was Yana stretching into areas that caused the pain. I did not know I was having my first real contraction at that point. My mother and I were on our way to the park to meet my husband there to watch him kiteboard and to go for a walk, when I experienced my second contraction while driving. That was about 15 minutes after the first contraction. At that point I told my mom that this could actually be a contraction I was feeling. When I had my next contraction about another 15 minutes later in the park, I was pretty sure I was in early labor. My mom and Adam wanted to take me home, but I wanted to stay in the park for a while. I figured I might as well enjoy the sunset and have the first hour or two of labor outside by the water, enjoying a beautiful Seattle summer night with my mother and husband. It was actually a really nice experience, despite the painful contractions.
Two hours later we were back home and the contractions came quicker and more forcefully. Then suddenly the contractions came much faster and I felt like I should be going to the hospital. I knew the 5-1-1 rule had not quite been reached, but I called the doctor and told her I really felt that I should be going to the hospital now as I was progressing quickly. I believe we got there around eleven or midnight. I got carted to my laboring room and got checked. I was at 5 cm at that point. I was told I would have to wait until a liter of fluids were put into me through the IV and my blood work was done before I could get an epidural. Thus I got to wait another hour and a half before I finally got some relief. The worst was actually the huge IV needle they inserted, though, as they wanted the fluids to go in quick. I am literally still bruised from that IV now, three weeks after the birth.
The epidural was great, although it didn't take good effect in my left side at first. Since I am quite tall and strong, they had to give me quite a bit of drugs before I could feel some decent relief. When I reached 8 cm, a few hours later, the epidural had completely worn off, even though it was a continuous one. Boy, those contractions were no laughing matter at that point. Fortunately eventually the doctor returned to insert more drugs. She must have given me some of the good stuff, because I finally was more or less pain-free. In no time I was at ten cm and ready to push. Apparently I pushed like a champ, as I made quick progress.
What an amazing experience! I pushed for an hour and a half and my beautiful, little Yana was born. They put her on my chest and I just was completely stunned at this little creature coming out of me. She was perfect. My husband cut the cord and my mother took pictures and some video. They left Yana on my chest for a while and then cleaned her up. I needed some stitches for tearing, but it was not too bad. Unfortunately the epidural had worn off again at that point, and getting sown up while feeling everything was a bit uncomfortable, but I was too distracted by my beautiful baby to be bothered too much.
We stayed at the hospital for one day and one night after that, and I learned during that time what people mean when they say you learn to love in a whole new way. My mother instincts kicked in in full force, and I fell madly in love with the little creature.
I was incredibly lucky to have given labor in a small and intimate hospital with some amazing people. I feel blessed to have been able to share this event with my husband and my mother. I honestly could not imagine having had a much better birth experience than I had. Three weeks later now, I also pretty much shed my pregnancy weight and have a flat tummy again. I have healed great, as well. To this day, I have not had a sliver of baby blues. I am incredibly happy, and completely in love with my daughter, who is the easiest and calmest baby I could have wished for. I am incredibly blessed :)
