Birth Story:
Monday Feb 18 I had a doc appt. I was two days overdue. My blood
pressure was a little high and I told my doc that the baby hadn't been
as active for the past couple of days, so she decided that I would be
induced that night at 9pm. I was 2cm dilated as well. I had a
ultrasound at my appt and they said he would be about 7lbs 3oz, so I
was a little worried about that. I didn't think I could push out a baby
that size. So we get to the hospital a little early and get settled in
and all that fun stuff. They inserted this stuff called cervidil to
ripen my cervix and at 11pm I took a sleeping pill. I woke up at 3am to
severe pressure and pain and I knew I was in labor. They checked me a
couple of hours later and I was 4cm dilated. I got the epidural and
felt really good. I thought they would give me pitocin to increase my
labor but the nurse told me that since I was laboring and contracting
on my own there was no need for the pitocin. Well they did have to give
it to me after a while because the epidural slowed my labor down a bit.
There is such a difference between natural contractions and ones
brought on by pitocin. Around noon I told my nurse that my epidural was
wearing off so they topped me off but that only lasted about 90 mins so
they topped me off again but that only lasted 20 mins. I was checked
again and I was 6cm dilated and 100% effaced but baby's head hadn't
come down. I was progressing just fine but the baby's heartbeat was
having too many variances and the doc didn't like that and at that time
I was having sooo much pain and pressure that I told the doc that I
would be ok with a c-section, and he agreed that I should have one
(because of the baby's heartbeat, not because I practically begged for
one). The atmosphere in the operating room was great; since it wasn't
an emergency c-section there was no reason to rush. When they pulled
Benjamin out he didn't cry at first but I knew he wouldn't because when
they broke my water earlier that day there was meconium in the fluid
which meant the baby had had a bowel movement in the womb so they told
me they wanted to suction him out real good before he took his first
breath and not to freak out if he didn't cry right away. Benjamin David
Walter Smith was born 2-19-08 at 4:04pm 6lbs 19 1/4 inches long. ( So
at my doc appt the day before they were sooo off on his weight).
Because of my gestational diabetes he was checked twice on his blood
sugars and each was perfectly fine, so all in all he was a very healthy
little boy. I did a good job, lol.
Now that I think back about my labor, I wish I had waited to get the
epidural. The contractions weren't that bad, but they did get pretty
bad and I should have gotten the epi when they got pretty bad. I think
the baby would have tolerated the natural contractions better than the
induced ones. If we decide to have another baby I've decided to let
nature take its course and not worry so much about getting the baby out
just because I'm miserable.
