Linaeya-Rene`s birthstory
Well, I had been to the doctor on Friday morning for a membrane sweep which she was unable to do because the Baby`s heart rate was low. They did an NST, though, and everything looked fine then so she sent me on my way with a sweep planned for the next Tuesday.
I went to work Friday (the big recital was that weekend at the studio I work for) but had to leave early as I was SO exhausted! I went to sleep about 4:00 in the afternoon, woke up to eat dinner a few hours later, and then crashed for another 10 or 11 hours. (My body was preparing for labor!)
I went back to the high school where the recital was being held on Saturday morning, but decided to put my birth bags in the car just in case since I would be an hour away from home. I had contractions all morning, but nothing regular or new. We made it through a couple of shows when I was talking to another teacher backstage and felt a strange gush down below, then another, and so I excused myself and went to the restroom. Sure enough, I peed and then kept peeing! My water had broken! This was about 3 pm. I thought it was a funny color, but not having seen my water with either of my other two births (the midwife had to break it just before delivery with both of them) I wasn`t sure if there was meconium or not.
I called my husband at work - he works just a few minutes from where I was - and left a message for him to call me. He was due to get off work in only 15 minutes so the studio owner arranged for someone to drive me to him.
During that short drive I noticed some contractions about 4 or 5 minutes apart but they weren`t very strong yet. After my husband had taken over the driving and we were on our way to the Birthing Center, the contractions were starting to pick up in frequency and intensity. By the time we got there, they were 2 minutes apart and lasting 45 seconds.
The midwife checked me and I was 3 cm, 80% effaced, baby at plus1 and I did indeed have meconium in the water and would have to be transferred to the hospital.
After a couple of changes of pants and a quick snack, we drove next door to the hospital and got checked in. My contractions were still coming every 2 minutes and I quickly went into full-fledged labor with waves of nausea coming after each contraction peak. The weird thing was that my contractions peaked almost immediately after they began - there was no 10 or 15 seconds to fully relax as they reached full intensity that I had with my other two births. The baby was also moving with each contraction. I felt like I would be able to handle things so much better if he/she would just hold still! At this point Baby was in a posterior position.
A few hours went by of very hard labor where I lost track of time, fell asleep in between contractions. They told me the baby was having some decelerations in heart rate so they hooked the IV up and gave me oxygen. At that point I said, `If this is going to end up a c-section let`s hurry up and just do it now, I am done!` My husband recognized the signs of transition and called my mom to come down, my mom and kids came in the room sometime around 8:00 or so.
I asked the midwife to check me because I needed some light at the end of the tunnel. She checked me at 8:45 and I was at 7 cm. She told me she didn`t think it would be very long and suggested I try hands and knees position. My mom took the kids out for a quick snack and I had a contraction as I was shifting to hands and knees. Once I was settled on all fours, I had another contraction and felt a lot of pressure, the next one I had that involuntary grunt and said the baby is coming!
I turned back over with lots of help, my hubby called my mom and said RUN, two contractions later Linaeya Rene` was born! I went from 7 cm to born in 6 minutes - wow! My mom and my daughter were in the room when she was born, and my husband, of course! Because of the meconium, the NICU team was there and whisked her away to make sure she was healthy, which she was. I was SOOOO happy labor was over and couldn`t believe I had a beautiful, healthy baby girl! She was exactly 1 week overdue, but my smallest baby yet (and she wasn`t born in a posterior position, yay).
WHAT A BLESSING!
