I ended up being induced a week early due to our baby measuring a bit on the small side. My Dr said it was protocol to induce if an ultrasound revealed that a baby fell below the 10Th percentile. I was admitted Tuesday, Feb. 11Th and the induction process began Wednesday morning. The whole process was very slow and grueling. It took my body forever to kick in and go into labor. Up until Thursday afternoon, my cervix remained locked and stayed at a steady 1 cm dilated even though I was having extremely strong contractions every minute. I was dehydrated, dizzy, weak and throwing up blood. It was so bad that I couldn't even keep ice chips down. It felt as if I had a terrible case of the flu and the last thing on my mind at the time was having a baby. I was begging for a c-section, but that wasn't plausible, so I told my nurse that the moment I can have an epidural to shoot me up. Finally, at around 2 pm my cervix decided to loosen and measured a bit over 2 cm . For the next hour all I could do was stay in bed because the pain was excruciating! It was all I could do to get through each and every contraction. On top of having awful contractions, I had the most annoying nurse possibly. She was annoying and didn't know when to keep her chatty mouth shut. When a woman is contracting, the last thing she wants to do is strike up a conversation! At around 2:30 I told my nurse that I had to use the bathroom. I felt backed up and thought for sure I had to have a bowel movement. I had heard of women having movements while giving birth, so I thought perhaps my system wanted to cleanse itself before the baby actually arrived. After about a half hour of trying to go I gave up and my nurse decided to check me to see if I had made any progress. So at 3 pm my nurse checked me and to our surprise, I was 9 cm dilated and the baby was crowning and my water broke, more like burst(which meant I missed the window of opportunity for an epidural). My nurse ran out into the hall and called the resident nurse in (since my Dr was at his office at a different location) the neonatologist and the OR doctors. I managed to hold-off delivering until my Dr arrived (ten minutes later). During all of this, the baby`s heart-rate dropped to 60 beats per minutes, so it was crucial to get the baby out quickly-The Dr`s were on the verge of performing an emergency C-section right there in my room! My Dr arrived just in time and knowing that my baby was measuring small and was positioned low knew he could get the baby out quickly and safely. So after a few hard-core pushes and the help of a vacuum, our baby was born. Ryland was checked over and taken out of the room, so I missed out on the whole initial bonding process, something I was really looking forward to. After 45 minutes of being stitched back up(I had extreme tearing), Ryland was brought back into my room and I was able to begin bonding. We have been home for a week and a half now, and our little man couldn`t be doing any better. He is the love of my life and I would do it all over again :o) My husband later told me that he caught my Dr yelling at the nurse who was suppose to be taking care of me and monitoring my progress. He was furious over the fact that I was in the bathroom for a half hour pushing and any GOOD nurse would have known that I was trying to push the baby out! I hope for every other woman's sake that nurse got fired! LOL
