At 630am I woke up feeling “strange”; I went to the bathroom and to my surprise there was blood in the toilet. I tried to wake up Raul but he wouldn’t budge. I told him that I think we were going to have a baby today but he was in denial. At 7:30am the contractions begun; they were about 10 minutes apart and pretty painful but bearable. Raul still would not get up I tried and tried to get him up but he was being so stubborn. I decided to take a shower in an attempt to relax but it didn’t work. I then started cleaning and getting everything together just in case this was “it”.

I told Raul to get out his notebook and a “stop watch” (the ipod) so that he could start keeping track of the contractions. They were now about 7 minutes apart and getting pretty strong. I just sat on the couch and every time one would come I would just cover my face so that it was like I was in my world and no one else was around me. In between all of the contraction Raul and I would joke around like normal as if this was nothing out of the ordinary. At 10:30 as I was sitting on the couch I felt somewhat of a “pop” and then a little rush of water down there. I told Raul, “I think my water just broke!” He didn’t believe me once again so I told him to call his mother to ask her what it was like when that happened. He was too embarrassed to call her at that time.

We called the doctors but dummy pushed the wrong option and ended up calling the office instead of being transferred to the midwife on call and seeing as it was the weekend we got the machine. The midwifes said that if we didn’t get an answer the first time we called to leave a message and wait 30 minutes to call again. So that was our plan. Raul finally texted his mom about the water and she called us right away. He explained what had happened and then attempted to hand me the phone which was not ok because I was in no way alright to be chatting on the phone. He put the phone up to my ear and she asked me about the contractions and about the water and demanded that I go to the hospital right that instant. Raul then went out to shovel out the car as it had snowed about a foot since we last drove the car. I gathered up the last of our things to leave Raul called the doctors again (it was 30 minutes later) and this time he pushed the right option. The midwife on call was Joyce and she said to go ahead and head on up to the hospital and to go the the second floor to Labor and Delivery. So we were off; the hospital which is less then a mile from our house and arrived about 3 minutes later. We had no idea where to go or to park and to make matters worse there was major construction going on so everything was a mess there. We finally found some patient parking and began the long walk to the doors of the ER and just looked for any sign that said Labor and Delivery or an elevator to the second floor. It would have probably been a good idea for us to do the hospital tour or at least a “dry run”. We finally found the door to Labor and Delivery and got buzzed in. The walk down that hallway seemed to last forever seen now I had to stop about ever 2-3 minutes because of a contraction but I tried to just walk it off slowly. As we approached the desk I saw Joyce and some nurses; they didn’t seem very concerned that I was in labor. Come to find out later they didn’t think I was in actual active labor because of how good I was walking and that had a smile on my face. A nurse took my temperature and checked my weight and sent me to the labor triage room where she had me put on a gown and pee in a cup. Another nurse then hooked me up to the monitors for the baby’s heart beat and to measure the contraction. Raul and I then just sat there and waited about an hour. As we waited every time a contraction came I would feel the worse of it in my back, it was horrible. I would call Raul over closer every time one came to hold his hand and would squeeze the pain away to his hand. He cried about that saying I was going to break him thumb like a “big baby” would. It seemed like we were going to be there forever but eventually another nurse came in, Carla, and asked, “So, what is going on with you?” I told her that the contractions were getting stronger and that I was feeling it all in my back she told me to lay on my side and it should be better. Since the pain was in my back the monitor to pick up the contractions wasn’t picking them up right so the nurse now really didn’t think I was in labor. Joyce finally came in to check me and come to find out I was EIGHT centimeters already. They were so surprised!!!

Since I was already this far along it was too late for an epidural so the only option I had was to go with nothing or the get something little from an IV. I told them at this point I was up for anything. So we gathered our things up and walked down the hall to room 3 when Joyce asked if I would like to try getting in the tub instead of the IV meds. I really didn’t care what I did as long as I did something to take off the edge a little. She told me that the meds from the IV would make me drowsy but the tub would not and they would both do about the same thing. So I told her ok I’ll try the tub. Carla hooked my IV up and off we were to yet another room, room 5. We started the tub and I got undressed and sat in there. I didn’t feel that it was taking any pain away but it was a bit more “relaxing” They then gave us some “pre-admission” forms to fill out, this was the last of my worries but Raul just sat there and asked me all the questions anyways.

At this time it was about 1:30 and the pain was horrid. I just breathed and screamed the pain away. After about 45 minutes of being in the tub I got a LOT of pressure and told Raul that he need to go get someone now; he stuck his head out the door and didn’t see anyone so he thought that was good enough and just came back into the bathroom. I asked him when are they coming and he said he didn’t see anyone so he just came back I then scolded him to go and find someone because I was now in the worst pain. He eventually found someone and they told him to get me out of the tub. I dried off a little and put my gown back on. It felt so much better to stand up and just sway my hips. I breathed out the pain to the best of my ability. It was now time to get up on the table and get check again. I was now a nine and ready to push. So it was now about 2:20 or so and I just bore down and pushed. I really felt like I had to give up and could not do it. I kept telling them “I can’t I can’t!” but they were so sweet and told me I was doing so well and that I could do it. That I was doing so well that I should pop out about 8 to 10 more. I told them yeah right! As he began to crown the nurse told Raul to look at his baby’s head of hair but as he looked his face turned so pale that he had to sit down. Joyce and Carla were getting pretty concerned about him so they got him so juice, crackers, peanut butter, ice, and a wet wash cloth. I pushed for about 20 minutes and he was out; at 2:51pm my beautiful son was born. The cord was actually wrapped around his neck two times and had a huge double knot. It was amazing that he did so well during delivery like that. We found out that Jeremiah had cleft palate as well as cleft lip but we prepared ourselves and accepted it with no problems. Raul cut his cord and they placed him on my chest. I just looked in awe and felt so much emotion running through my body. When they took him to get weighed and measured he came in at 6 pounds 5 ounces and 20 inches long with a 13 ½ inch head; he scored an 8 and a 9 on the Apgar. He was swaddled and handed back to us. It was amazing to see Raul with his son; he was beaming and his smile went from cheek to cheek. I had some second degree tears so had to get stitches but I didn’t care because it was worth it all. Jeremiah was so beautiful! His lip made him that much cuter. It’s amazing that you can fall in love with someone so fast
