Rai Smith`s birth story

Due Date: Monday 31st March 2008
Birth Date: Friday 11th April 2008 - 12.57pm

Monday 7th/Tuesday 8th April:

It all started on Monday night (7th April) when i started to notice i was having some pains that were lasting about 30 odd seconds and that was the first time id noticed some pain that seemed to be quite lengthy. So it was midnight on the Tuesday when i thought id start timing them, from midnight to 1am they were 8 mins apart and lasting 50ish seconds. We were driving about in the car at the time, we pulled over and i decided to get out for a bit of a walk to see if they stopped - they did so we went home to bed, got up the next morning with these pains again.
So i started timing them - from 8-9am on the Tuesday morning i was timing them at anywhere between 4 mins and 13 mins - once again this only lasted an hour so i managed to get some sleep and they were gone for most of that afternoon, so i assumed that it this was just false labour.

Wednesday 9th April:

I was still having some contractions but nothing that seemed worth timing as they were totally random my midwife turned up to perform a sweep and check of my cervix around 10.30am, she told me that the contractions i was getting were preparing my cervix in order for labour, but she told me my cervix was closed and still far back, so she performed a sweep and told me that it should get things moving. If this didn’t work then i was to be induced at the hospital on Sunday 13th. She then left and for the rest of the day i was having the same types of random contractions but nothing that seemed to be getting closer or stronger but i was a bit confused because they were not going away no matter what i did (like take a bath, move about or resting) so didn’t know if it was the beginning of slow labour.

Thursday 10th April:

I was getting really annoyed at this point because i was STILL having irregular and random contractions, but i noticed that they seemed a lot stronger today, they were still lasting about 50-60 seconds but i didn’t want to time them because they seemed totally random so i tired to put it at the back of my mind and that i would start timing them when i noticed they were closer together. I was still in pain for the rest of the day, then my partner got home from work about 5.30pm as the evening went on the contractions were getting really painful but again not coming closer together. By about 8-9pm when each contraction came i had to get on the floor on all fours and try to breath, it was taking up all of my concentration and along with it came really bad back ache. As time went on about 10-11pm we tried timing them again as i noticed they were much much stronger, but still no consistency to them they were anything from 3mins to 20 mins apart. So we finally went to bed, again the pain was quite unbearable but didn’t want to phone the hospital as they would probably send me home. I kept saying to Dan that i didn’t want to be left on my own the following day because they hurt me so much. Through my contractions at this time i was actually crying my eyes out because they were hurting me so much, they seemed to be worse when i tried to lay down and i was getting angry with myself because i was so tired and wanted to sleep.

Friday 11th April:

By Midnight we phoned the hospital and i explained what was happening and because she said they were not regular that i probably wasn’t in labour and they would only send me home, she suggested going in the bath for as long as possible and to ring back if they got worse. So i got into the bath and that helped a bit but not much, i stayed in for as long as i could and got out at about 1.30am. I got back into the bedroom and the contractions kept coming, more and more painful each time, i was crying, screaming, throwing things i didn’t know how to handle the pain. It got to about 4am and i know that i knew that couldn’t take anymore, the contractions were still not consistent at this point but seemed to be every 6 or so mins. I badly wanted pain relief and although i told myself the whole way through the pregnancy that i didn’t want an epidural, i know that i really really wanted one at this point. I rang the hospital again and she said okay then come down so we got ready and into the car, the stupid thing was i didn’t take any of the packed bags because i was convinced they would send me home! I was put into a room and a midwife came and assessed me, she told me i was 5cms dilated!! i could not believe it. I told her i wanted an epidural and she told me that there was a big waiting time as the man who did them was in theatre, she offered the pehidine injection and the enntenox. By this time my partner had gone home to get my bags. the gas and air and the injection took effect and i felt wonderful, i felt so high and off my head. I was hallucinating and it felt like i wasn’t actually 'with it' i was just in a daze. I just sat there in the room on my own and laughed to myself as i found it so funny. This was the best few hours of labour by far! They told me they would check me again at 9am. By 9am the injection was wearing off and i felt them more intensely and they told me the epidural man was still in surgery, i was really really begging for one at this point. I had no choice but to keep with the gas and air. At 10.45am they broke my waters then i was moved to a different room where i was hopefully going to get the epidural. While they moved me, they took my gas and air away, i thought i was going to die!! They finally got me into that other room and hooked me up to the gas and air again. I was being set up for the epidural about 11.30am and the drip was put into my hand and some blood was taken, also my bladder was drained. She did i check on my dilation and told me i was already 10cms, she had a word with the team leader and i was not allowed the epidural as it was too late. I was gutted. It came to 11.45 and she told me i had to start pushing. I was put into different positions to help the baby move down, these included sitting on the toilet, which i did not like at all, squatting and the position that i was in for most of the time was leaned over the back of a chair in a squatting position, as i tired pushing. It just felt so uncomfortable. i was helped back onto the bed and was on all fours, by this point i was screaming the hospital down in total agony. i was turned on my back and had my legs up against Dan and the midwife and i tired pushing. The midwife was getting a bit frustrated as i couldn’t to it properly. i just found it difficult to push and hold my breath in, when id been breathing through contractions for the past few hours. This was properbly the most painful/strange feeling part of it all. Every time i pushed the head crowned then when i stopped it went back up, this was getting on my nerves so i tried my hardest to push and push, it burned like crazy and his head finally came out, i pushed again and she pulled the body out at 12.57pm, what a relief!!!

I wouldn’t like to go through that again, but as the days go on, you gradually forget about the pain and concentrate on your new baby! Now at least i can say that I’ve experienced childbirth and i love my son so so much!
