BIRTH STORY
On Monday 22nd I went out shopping with my friend for the day. I was getting the occasional twinge but didn't really think anything of it. That night I was still feeling a little uncomfortable but just put it down to the joys of being 9 months preg!! We went to bed that night about 11pm and I awoke about 12 with a slight lower pain but then went back to sleep. A few hours later the pain was coming back but I was able to drop off to sleep in between but realised about 3am that it was coming every 20 minutes and it might be "Something!!" At about 4am we got up and went downstairs as the contractions were coming more often, about 10 mins apart and I couldn't sleep in between. We watched some trashy television. There is such rubbish on at 5am!! When the contractions were coming about every 6 mins we phoned the hospital to let them know. They said to try and stay at home as long as possible but after putting the phone down they seemed to intensify so we called back to let them know we were on our way! We arrived at the hospital at 7am. They did an internal examination and the midwife asked how dilated I'd like to be! I jokingly said about 8cm, well thats what I was!!! I was so pleased as I thought that meant I wouldn't have long to wait. I was walking around the room and looked down and realised there was blood running down my leg (TMI!) I panicked but the midwife said it was just my plug and when I looked it was horrible!! Just as people have described!! After a few hours I was struggling to cope with the pain so I asked for an epidural but I was told there was no one available to administer it!!!! GREAT! Not what I wanted to hear. All my contractions were really low down at the front. No back pain or high up pain. Anyway, I asked to go into the birthing pool to help with the pain. The warm water really helped but baby didn't seem to want to come out. All the time they were monitoring the babys heart rate and she was doing just great! I was still struggling with the pain but they were STILL saying there was no one available to do the epidural. I got out of the pool so they could do another examination and I was fully dilated but I just didn't have any urge to push. At this point my waters were still intact so she broke these for me to try to help things along. I got back in the pool but nothing was happening and still no urge to push. Midwife couldn't understand why nothing was happening so she got me out of the pool and on to the bed. She checked and babys head was right there! She asked me to try and push and see what happened. So I did. Two big pushes later Isobel arrived!!! Sceaming from the second she was out. She was placed straight onto my chest where she was fully alert and looking around. I only had a slight tear and so luckily I didn't need any stitches. But after all that it took 40 minutes for the placenta to come out which is a really weird feeling. Isobel was born at 10.29am. I had a shower and some lunch and we came home about 5pm.
It was a truly amazing experience (No pretending it's not bloody painful though!)
