Aeon-Elyse`s birthstory
I was upset all day Tuesday because it seemed like labor was never coming. I swore my little girl wanted to be an August baby! My boyfriend and I went to bed around 1am on the 30th. Two hours later I woke up and lifted my leg in preparation for that 3-point-turnover all preggos do when they get too big. Anyway, I leaked just a little and stopped and wondered if I had to pee or if it was my water. So I got up to check and waddled to the bathroom. It was just a trickle. Wasn`t able to pee much at all, so I went to go smell the sheets and by the time I got halfway back to the bedroom my thighs were wet. The sheets didn`t smell at all, so I knew it must be my water. I debated for a moment if I should wait for contractions or just wake my boyfriend. I decided to wake him and let him know we might need to go soon. We called the hospital & I called my mom. We took our time making sure we had everything we wanted & needed and also we put the carseat together & installed it. I only had 2-3 mild contractions that didn`t feel really different from BH until shortly after arriving at the hospital. It was about 5:30am when we checked in. They had me put on those huge hospital gowns, disposable underwear (like shorts made of white netting, weird!) and the most enormous maxipad I`ve ever seen in my life! They checked me, said I was dialated to a 1 and about 70% effaced. Hooked me up to the monitors for a while and we went through some paperwork. The contractions were very easy for the first several hours. We walked the halls for a bit and they had me back on the monitors for a while every hour or so. They were coming 4-6 minutes apart.
My mom came in around 11:00 that morning, and after doing some more hall-walking my contractions finally got stronger to the point that I had difficulty walking through them. The midwife suggested pitocin and I said no, I wanted to avoid it as long as I could. They said my contractions were getting really regular, but not close enough together. My mother suggested I try squatting, since it shortens the birth canal and gravity helps baby drop lower. They were strong before, but oh my god, when I got down in that squat one hit me soooo hard I couldn`t believe it. After that, they only got worse. I stopped almost all talking around that point and could only squirm around and moan through the contractions. I had originally wanted a meds-free labor but I left the option open in case I changed my mind. And after abut an hour of active labor and painful contractions I was beginning to change my mind. By 2:30 I was in the tub and could barely keep my eyes open I was so exhausted. I had Orin inform them I wanted drugs and they got me out of the tub and hooked up my IV for the first time. They gave me fentanol (sp?) to take the edge off and asked if I wanted an epidural. I said yes. They checked my cervix, said I was 5-6 centimeters. The anesthesiologist was AWESOME. I only felt a tiny pinprick and then all the pain seemed to go away. I felt a huge energy level dfference and was able to talk again and even had some sense of humor. lol. They put a small bit of pitocin in the IV to keep things going. They left me for about an hour and when they came back between 3:30 and 4:00 they checked my cervix again and I was ready to go. I seem to have gotten my mom`s good genes for labor, yay! Once that epidural was in, I had to check the monitor to see when the contractions were hitting because I couldn`t feel any pain! Sometimes I`d feel the top of my belly tighten some, but that and some pressure down below when I ready to push was about it.
I don`t know exactly how long I was pushing but it was somewhere between 30 minutes and an hour. It was difficult, but really not bad. The pressure was kind of intense, but it didn`t feel painful until she was crowning, at which point I felt the stretching & burning and I remember saying `Oh fuck!` and screaming twice from pushing so hard to get her past that point. Her head came out and another push gave us her shoulders. After that she slid right out and they put her on my belly. She was purple and grey and very slimy, but it was wonderful! I didn`t get a very good look at her, she was only there for a minute. Orin cut her cord, which squirted blood on one of the nurses. lol. He stayed with her the whole time they cleaned her up and did the tests.
I only tore a little bit and it was on the inside. I don`t know for sure how many stitches there were, but the midwife said it was only a few & it`s now been about 36 hours since Aeon was born and they hardly sting when I pee (yay!). They do still hurt, of course!
Aeon was pretty much a perfect baby. No problems, very calm and easy going. She`s a natural at breast-feeding, although we sometimes have some difficult latching on, we usually get it pretty quick and things are great.
She was a big baby, everybody was surprised! 8 pounds and 13 oz, 21 inches long. I`m only 5`2.5 and I was 8 pounds 4 oz at birth (I was the 4th child). So far she`s very easy to take care of, which is great because we need to catch up some sleep so I can recover. My muscles ache ALL over! I`m sure she`ll have some rough nights soon, so I feel really grateful that she`s doing so well for now. :)
