On January 13th I went in for my amnio to check Logans lung maturity, my fluid was very low and it took them forever to get enough fluid for the test. I began having contractions there after and they were very uncomfortable. The test results came back a hour later and his lung maturity was ok for delivery the next day. The growth scan estimated his weight for 4lb 5oz.
Later that evening my contractions continued. After midnight I begin leaking fluid and stayed in bed since I had to wake up at 4 am to go to the hospital for my c-section.
Dennis and I finally got to the hospital and were put into triage where I was hooked up to monitors and given an IV. Turns out I was in labor!
Around 9am I am finally brought into the OR and soon after Dennis is brought in. It was the most overwhelming, emotional, exciting, frightening moment of my entire life. We were so anxious just to hear Logans weight, to see that he was ok, to see that there was nothing wrong with him. The neonatalist that was present said if he was under 2050 grams he would need to go straight up to the NICU.
Finally at 9:21 am Logan was delivered! He was calm for a few seconds and finally started screaming and crying! I just looked at him in disbelief, then looked at Dennis, I couldnt believe that after 9 longs months of not knowing if we would ever get to this moment, we finally had our little boy. I kept asking if he was ok, if they thought he had downs, and what his weight was. Then suddenly I began feeling the most horriable pain I have ever felt in my entire life, I began feeling intestinal pain, where the epidural did not take effect. From then on its pretty fuzzy, apparently I was given a very strong seditive. From there I remember forcing myself to stay awake through the pain, I was able to see Dennis holding Logan, and to hear his weight, 2065 grams! Then I was out. I woke up in triage, the neonatalist came in to tell me that Logan was up in the NICU with Dennis. Logan did not have down syndrome, but because of the IUGR was very hypoglycemic and malnourished. I then passed out again to wake up in a bed in an elevator. Dennis was standing by my side and told me they were bringing me to see Logan. Once in the NICU they wheeled me over to see Logan, laying on his belly on a warmer . He was breathing on his own, and was wide awake! I put my finger on his hand and he held on to it. I still can't even talk or write about without crying. I was able to stay long enough to tell him how much I loved him and that he will be with his Momma soon.
I then was brought down to my post op room. I was still woozy from the meds but feeling pain. So I was put on a morphine drip. About a hour or so later I was violently ill, I threw up all over myself from the medicine. And then passed out until the next morning.
When I woke up on the 15th Dennis reminded me of everything that happend. And I learned that Logan was still in the NICU and will remain there for a few days. All I could do is cry, I still was unable to go visit him. Dennis spent a lot of time up there with him. Once Dennis came back to our room , I learned that Logan needed a feeding tube, he was regurgitating the formula they were trying to feed him. He could not eat from the bottle what so ever. His bloodsugar was still very low and he was put on a glucose drip.
Later that day I was finally able to go visit him. He was so small, but proportionate with blue eyes and blonde hair. All I could do was cry , and I felt like an idiot for doing so. There were so many babies up there who were worse off. It just felt unfair, since the begining of this pregnancy we were told it would fail, then that we would have a sick baby if he wasnt still born. And we beat the odds! We finally proved the doctors wrong, we have our baby! BUT I couldnt hold him, I couldnt change his first diaper. I couldnt sleep with him, or rock him to sleep for his real first cry. We went through so much when I was pregnant just looking forward to all his firsts, just to miss them all.
On the 16th , it was pretty much the same as the 15th. Logans sugar was still very low, and he could not eat from the bottle and threw up everything.
Finally my milk came in!Sooner than expected. And I attempt breastfeeding the morning of the 17th. It was the most undescribably moment of my entire life, its like Logan and I were both MEANT to have that moment. It was the most perfect moment, I felt like I was born for that very second in time. Logan latched right on, and didnt let go until he was full. I couldnt believe it. My perionologist was right ( during a regular ultrasound he said that maybe all the baby needed was breast milk lol)! After that feeding Logans blood sugar stabilized. They substituted with 10 cc of formula just in case he did not eat enough. Then 3 hours later I came back up to feed him again, and for the next 3 days I was up there every 3 hours. I never really used any of the time in the hospital to heal, I couldnt feel the pain. I just needed to be with Logan. I felt like I could heal him, to make him better.
I was discharged on the 18th but the hospital allowed Dennis and I to spend an extra night off the books because we were breastfeeding. And it worked! His bloodsugar stabilized and gained 2.5 oz! They finally told us that he would be coming home with us.
During his discharge exam we found out that he had a VSD, which is probably related to his SUA. There is so much to this birth story that I want to write but I dont have the energy ,but all I can do is thank God for this perfect little guy. He is such an amazing baby. I will try to add more later.
