Eleanor`s birthstory

My story actually started a week before with my monthly Ultrasound checkup with the doc. At that point i was 33 weeks pregnant. He pointed out that my baby`s AC was too low, it was showing 28 weeks, meaning the baby was not growing. I had to then immediately see a radiologist to confirm the measurements. Well they did, my baby was behind in growth by about 3 weeks.
The doc then said the best thing to do was to be admitted to the hospital and be given a steroid injection so that my baby`s lungs can be matured in case he`s born earlier and then follow it up with twice weekly NST sessions and weekly visits to the radiologist.

Wednesday and Thursday the 5th and 6th I was in hospital, got the 2 steroid injections and had another NST session on Saturday. While at hospital I was reassured, because I could hear my baby;s heartbeat, everytime the nurses came to monitor me. But when I was home from Saturday, I could not relax, I`d ask my husband to put his hear to my stomache and using a stopwatch, he would count the babys heartbeat per min. That put me at ease. So he would do that every morning and evening.

My next appt. with the radiologist and doc was to be on Wednesday the 5th of March. After the appt me and my doc would then make a decision on whether to proceed with a ceaser or give my baby chance to grow in my womb, while monitoring him.
This appt was not to happen, however.

The night before, Tuesday the 4th March, after work I asked my husband to do a heartbeat check. He put his hear to my stomache, but as usual he could not hear the heartbeat. I already started to panic, and asked him to make sure, he moved around a couple more times, but still could not hear the heartbeat. I was like, lets go to the hospital, he said let`s try one more time. He put his ear lower and finally could hear the heartbeat! 148 bpm, I was so overwhelmed with emotion, I just started crying. Samuel hugged me and it was fine. That was 08:30 pm

We went to sleep right after. Around 09:30 pm, I got up, wanting to go to the loo, as i got up I felt like something popped and thinking it was my water breaking, checked my hand and saw it was blood. I felt something flowing and saw that my panty and pantyliner was soaked in blood. I told my husband now we must definitely go the hospital. he was out of bed and dressed in 2 secs, I just put on my slippers and put on a maternity pad and was ready to go. Strangely enough I was very calm. Called the doc to mlet him know were on our way to the hospital, he then called the labour ward. It took us 10 min to get to the hospital, luckily it was at night, there was no traffic, also my husband drove like crazy!

At the hospital the first thing the nurses did was and NST, the baby`s heartbeat and breathing was fine. They immedaitely prepared me for an emergency c-section surgery.

My husband was allowed in the theatre room, so he saw everything. I was given an epidural, so felt nothing from the waist down. I dont know why people prefer C-section, because though painless, it still a very uncomfortable experience, you can feel every pull and tug and pressure. While my baby was been taken out, Leona Lewis` `You cut me open and I keep bleeding` was playing in the background. Now that was very ironic and funny!

My baby was finally born, he was so tiny, he weighed 1, 380 kg, they let my husband hold him a while and let me kiss him, while i was being stitched up. I was so happy because he was breathing on his own, and was crying. For me he is the most perfect little boytjie. Very cute! They then took him to the Neo Natal Unit in ICU and put him on oxygen.

I was not yet done though, I must say the stitching up part of the ceaser is the most awful part of the whole experience, i could feel the stitches being put in, my skin being pulled, just felt like an eternity, but finally it was all done.

I spent 3 nights in the hospital, Jayden was in ICU for 1 night, and then moved to the high care unit the next day as he could breathe on his own, and didn`t need to be hooked up to the oxygen machine anymore.

He will spent another 2 weeks in the hospital, until he has picked up more weight. When he weighs about 2 kg`s we`ll be able to bring him home. I can`t wait!
