Connor's birthstory

On the morning of Saturday, August 1st I went into the hospital's labor & delivery ward for what I thought was going to be just another non-stress test. That was the day I officially reached 41 weeks pregnant and the day that I officially hit 10 calendar months of being pregnant. Everything on the monitors and ultrasound was fine but the hospital had amazingly freed up some room and the nurses were just about to start calling those of us who were planning inductions later in the week. I was one of the names at the top of the list since I was so far overdue and due to the fact that I was actually there the doctors and nurses told me that I could stay. Well, they actually said to come back at 3 and they'd have freed up a room. That worked out perfectly. I was able to pick up my step-daughter and go to her basketball game, go home to get my bag and kiss my daughter goodbye. My husband and I arrived at the hospital and were taken to my labor & delivery room. They did all of the normal questions and at about 4 pm started me on cytotec to begin the labor. Wow, that stuff works! I was fine for an hour or two but the contractions really began. By about 8 pm the contractions were strong and steady and I dialated from just barely 1 centimeter to 3 centimeters. The doctor had considered starting me on pitocin at this point but my nurse convinced her to hold off because of how well I was reacting to the cytotec. Unfortunately, the effects of the pill began to wear off after this and they eventually started the pitocin at 11. Things moved pretty quickly from there. By 3:30 am I was in heavy labor and was desperate for the epidural. I was checked by the doctor again just before the anesthesiologist began to put in my epidural and had progressed to 6 centimeters dialated. By the time the epidural was in I had moved to 9 3/4 centimeters! The epidural started working only minutes before the doctors had me start pushing! Well, the epidural definitely helped with the pain however it caused my blood pressure and Connor's blood pressure to plummet. The doctors started pumping me with all sorts of drugs to help me out. I was shaking and freezing cold but the doctors decided it was time to have me push. At this point it was about 4:10 am. As I was pushing poor Connor's heart rate dropped all the way down to the 40s. You could see the horror in the doctors and nurses faces. I think the entire labor & delivery staff and NICU staff was in my room now. A nurse later confirmed they pretty much were. Anyway I pushed a few on my own but the doctors decided the vacuum was needed. Within minutes he was out. His official time of birth was 4:26 am. Due to all the drama at birth he was rushed over to the incubator to be evaluated by the NICU staff as soon as my husband cut his cord. Other than a massive cone head that was seriously bruised he was completely fine. About 10 - 15 minutes after he was born I was finally able to hold him for the first time. The nurse suggested I try to breastfeed him so I did. He latched on like a pro and has been great at eating since. He is absolutely precious and is definitely a cuddler so far. His daddy (who he is the spitting image of) is completely smitten and his big sisters love to give him kisses.
