Aleigha-Grace`s birthstory

After marrying the guy I love with all my heart on May 19, 2007, I never thought I could fall that hard for another person. September 5, 2008 proved my thinking to be wrong!

When I went in for my normal checkup on Thursday, the 4th, everything was still looking good with me & the baby. I was still having trouble being able to go to the bathroom though. Earlier in the week my doctor had me come in to do an ultrasound on my bladder because she knew I was having troubles. Sure enough, the baby was squishing my bladder as flat as a pancake because of the position she was laying in. The doctor said as uncomfortable as it was, there was nothing she could do to relieve the pressure. The only thing that was going to do the job would be delivering her. She said they’d offer me options at my 39 week apt, which was just a couple days away. So Thursday finally came! When the doctor came in her first question was… “So, what are our feelings on being induced?” Me & Vic both answered that we were willing to give it a try. Being I was dialated to 1 ½ cm that day, she said I’d stand a 50/50 chance of the inducing working in my favor. They would let me try to dialate on potocin but could only let it go on for 3 days. If it wasn’t working within these 3 days, they’d have to follow through with a C-section. Me & Vic decided to take the question home with us to make the decision. Before leaving, my doctor decided to strip my membranes to see if she could get anything going any quicker! After talking it over, we decided we’d go ahead and set an appt to be induced Friday morning at 7:30am. It wasn’t an easy decision because I worried about the possibility of having a c-section. We decided to all go play Bingo that night to keep my mind off it all… Stripping the membranes did begin bringing on some mild contractions. Once we got home Thursday night, we made sure all our bags were packed and ready to go! I didn’t end up sleeping much that night. My nerves and the excitement prevented that.

After getting up & getting thru the shower, me & Vic headed over to my parents house. Once we got all of our bags ready there, we headed for the hospital. My nerves were terrible the whole morning. I was scared because I had no idea what to expect. We got in pretty quickly at the hospital. They issued me my room and gown, and within minutes they were in to begin my IV’s. My doctor came in to check me and said I was sitting at a strong 2cm. The potocin was upped about every 30min. The contractions did pick up with each increase but they weren’t unbearable. I was able to laugh and cut up with all of our family who came to support us. Around 1:00pm, my doctor came back to break my water. This only took a second and it’s something you don’t even feel, except for the gushing of water! This brought on harder contractions almost instantly. My mom laughs saying “She went from laughing and cutting up to… laying her head to the side and not saying a word!” We had taken childbirth classes prior to this… and honestly when the instructor talked about the breathing thru the contractions, I didn’t think too much about it because I didn’t think I’d use that method to get thru them. Once the contractions began picking up, I naturally just began breathing thru them. It’s amazing how much it helps to keep steady breathing thru them. By 3:00pm… I decided to get the epidural. Earlier before the doctor broke my water, I had a big scare. I was sitting on the birthing ball talking with my family, when all of the sudden a girl down the hall began screaming like the exorcist. She was yelling at the top of her lungs to the get it out. Talk about a first time mom freaking out! Haha When my doctor came in, she said the girl had refused the epidural… and to not let my pain get that far before accepting one. They checked me again before giving me the epidural and I was at 3cm. Once they stood me up to mark my spine for the epidural, the contractions picked up a tremendous amount. After marking me, they sat me straight up on the bed to give me the shot. The contractions began hitting every second at this point and were very strong. All I could do was put my hands on the bed to get thru them while they were doing the epidural. The pain of the long epidural needle didn’t even phase me because of the contractions. The anesthesiologist told my nurse to check me because it looked like I had, had a strong contraction. She said she would but that she had just done it and I was only at a 3. She laid me back... When she checked, she said “Oh my god, I’m going to do it again, but I think we got a 9!” Sure enough, I was at a 9. I went from a 3 to a 9 within 5 minutes because of them standing me up for the epidural. I knew those last contractions were stronger! They immediately turned the epidural off because of how fast I was going. An epidural takes an hour to kick in so they knew it would do no good. I had, had no plans of going all the way with no pain medicine but I didn’t have a choice now. My mom called to check on how the epidural went… and Vic told her that her and my Nana needed to get in there quick because I was at a 9. Me & Vic asked the two of them to be in the delivery room with us! Having the two of them in there supporting us was a decision we didn’t regret. The call was put into my doctor. She hadn’t expected me to go at least before midnight… especially with it being my first. She said she took off running from her office and booked thru the hospital. The nurses had me do 2 sets of 3 pushes with contractions before she got there. Everything was going so fast, they didn’t even have time to put Vic, my mom, and my Nana in scrubs. I was finally able to push the final three pushes that delivered our beautiful daughter into the world. The pushing was hard but at the same time knowing how close she was made it all so much easier. By the 3rd push, I remember looking at my mom and her saying “Push Ash! Her head is coming out!” With those words, I gave that final push my all… and the next thing I knew I had a beautiful baby laying on my belly, wide-eyed looking up at me! It was the most amazing feeling in the whole world. I couldn’t believe she was finally laying in my arms! While my doctor stitched and cleaned me up, the nurses took her to clean her up and weigh her. She weighed in at 6lbs, which was a shocker because the ultrasound showed her weighing 6lbs 14oz two weeks prior to that day. Her temperature was low, so they let us hold her for just a short while and then took her to the nursery to put her in a warmer. I didn’t see her again for a little over an hour. Once they brought her back… I was finally able to try nursing her. She immediately caught on to how to do that. It was amazing!

Throughout the weekend, the nurses had to come in and take her to the nursery periodically, whether it was for blood work to be drawn or to put her under a warmer to bring her body temp back up. I dreaded every time a nurse came in because I knew they were there to take our baby for one reason or another. The nurses said they preferred to keep her in the nursery with them the 1st night to watch her blood sugar level and body temp. It was a bummer because I had waited 9 months for her.. but we knew it was best for Aleigha’s sake to be with them. The next night, they said I could keep her in my room if I wanted. And of course, we did! We had many visitors come to see us so it helped time to pass quickly by while being in the hospital. By Sunday, our discharge date, we were ready to get out of there and take her home! My mom and family had left earlier than us to go back to our place and get food going before visitors arrived. It was so nice to have home cooked food after being in the hospital for 3 days! We had quite a few family members stop in to see our little one. It was a nice afternoon! After all the commotion died down, mom stayed around to help me with her bath and all! Having my mom only 7min away is nice! I wasn’t rally nervous at all… but I think a lot of that has to do with knowing my mom was there if I needed help or didn’t know what to do.

Now having our little girl here… it’s like living in a fairytale with her! We have been very lucky with her… She’s the most easy going baby… Sleeps all night… And rarely ever even makes a fuss! The smiles are amazing! They started the very first night in the hospital… and become more and more frequent every day! By far, she’s the best gift God could have ever blessed our family with! I think Daddy looks at how easy going Aleigha is… and thinks he’s ready for #2 already, ha ha…. Mommy, on the other hand, is content with just her for now! I look forward to expanding our family more… but not any time real soon! We’re very lucky with the one we have… and I’m looking forward to experiencing all the little moments that the future will hold with her!
