Izabella-Okelani`s birthstory
I had been on bedrest for about 17 weeks with IC and a cerclage. She was an emergency C-Section at 35 weeks 3 days. I was having contractions all day and when they finally got to about 5 minutes apart I went in to L&D. I got a turb shot and it seemed like it helped so I was expecting to get checked out and be sent home. The doc came to check my and said `ooh I feel a little foot trying to come out`....oh my goodness!! He then proceeded to tell us that we were going to get preped for a C-Section right now.....right now???...right now!!!! So my partner asked him `Is she dialated?` and the doc said, `a few`. Talk about emotions running through me!! So it all went so fast from there....I got preped, had the c-section and there she was!!!! She was 5 lbs 15 oz and was about 19 in long. She did great for about the first 6 hours and was even ready to eat asap! =). ...then she started having typical premie problems. First, trouble regulating her temperature, then oxygen levels. So they put her in the NICU. Then they noticed through blood work that her body was trying to desperately fight off some infection (they didn`t know from where) as her white blood cell count was really high (actually her extremely high immature white blood cell count is what was most concerning). So she was immediately started on anti-biotics and blood cultures were ordered to try to find the cause. A few days later she was placed under the lights for elevated bilirubens (jaundice). Then a couple days later she started having difficutly eating what she was supposed to so they started a feeding tube. They gave her a lumbar puncture (spinal tap) to get some fluid out for a culture to check for meningitis to make sure that isn`t the infection her body was trying to fight. So her bilirubens went down to normal within about 2 days and they took her off the lights. Then she was able to eat better so they took the feeding tube out the next day. Then about a day or so after that she was able to breath without any assistance (she was getting minimal at this point). So they took her oxygen off. So she was just taking her antibiotics to complete the series. They did blood counts and it looked like the antibiotics were working. So she gets to come home today!! yay!! She spent a total of 7 days in the NICU. She was a very strong and willful baby. She did very well fighting off all the barriers that premie-hood threw at her!! She is wonderful!!! I Thank God everyday for her!
