It really started on April 15 at about 4 am, while I was online reading about ladies in week 39, and my braxton hicks contractions started to feel like cramps (which after 9 months of not having my period were really creepy). My braxton hicks contractions had been building up for one week exactly. I was unable to sleep that night because of 1. braxton hicks 2. urinating every 30 minutes 3. anxious about an ultrasound to check for IUGR. By 5 am I was dressed and made a big breakfast. Then my mom took me and my brother to the hospital. The ultrasound itself was fun, but the doctor came in and said I need to deliver on account that there was low fluid and the placenta did not seem to be functioning correctly. I was told to go straight to my delivering hospital.
I decided to go home instead of the hospital because I was scared of the induction. I had contractions all morning and I dealt with them by changing positions and applying heat. I went to my bed and my contractions slowed down. The health center called and yelled at me about an hour later so I got up, but I took a hot shower which calmed my contractions down even more. Then I ate some pizza and finally I went to the hospital about 2pm. Administration tried to rush me through the process but there was a fire drill and I got even more time, lol. I went to the bathroom while we waited and I had a discharge that was the same consistency of something I'd been passing since I had pre-term contractions in week 30, except it was yellow. I finally got rid of that mucous plug and just in time.
They took me straight to the L&D room and checked me. My contractions had calmed all the way down but I was already 3cm dilated and 90% effaced! They started the pitocin right away (3:30 pm) and I started my breathing techniques. They also placed a monitor on my baby’s head and broke my water at the same time. The amniotic fluid was really warm and more came out with every contraction I had. The nurse reported that there was meconium in the fluid, which is a sign that Melody was under a little bit of stress.
After about two hours the pain became really intense, to the point where I was sobbing, and my mother kept begging me to take some kind of pain relief. I considered that I would have 24 hours from when they broke my water to deliver, and that I was in extra pain because of the pitocin, and that I would most likely be laboring for a really long time... and I asked for an epidural. The anesthesiologist came immediately and said I might feel a stinging sensation, and I sure did. The epidural hurt so badly, and I never have trouble with shots! It pained me for a couple days and I put heat on my back until it felt better.
The epidural took maybe 10 or 15 minutes to kick in. It was mostly working on my right side so the nurse put some pillows to lean me to the left. The drastic change from being in crazy pain to having like 95% of it numbed, put me into a deep sleep. I would wake with every contraction and then doze back off, and that happened for about an hour. My contractions were still painful, only all the pain was located in my crotch. Then the pain started lasting and it didn't go away. Even though I was not contracting I was crying and the nurse told me to hush, she thought I was just being a baby.
Just then the doctors came in (I had two doctors and one nurse). I think they heard me screaming and decided to check. They were going to see how far dilated I was and the one doctor was like 'I see her head; we're going to have a baby!' The nurse took my catheter out though she it seems like it was only in for a few minutes. They set up and were going to have me put my feet in their hands, lol. Well, before I could say anything my mom was like, can she use the stirrups, thanks God. My mom showed them how to set up the stirrups and I bore down and did the techniques I had read about. The doctor said I was doing it just right and to continue so through the pain I gained some confidence and I pushed.
It took like 6 pushes I think, well in less then ten minutes I pushed my daughter's head out and I heard them suctioning her. They told me not to push when her head came out. The umbilical cord was around her neck. I finally pushed her out and my tears changed from tears of pain to tears of joy.
I totally noticed delivering the placenta, it was pretty big not to. Then I had to endure the doctors stitching up some cuts that Melody made coming out. She was wide awake and crying. They weighed her right in the room and she had her first poop and pee outside the womb. She was tiny, but I did not realize just how small she was until after I got home. The first thing I noticed was her big brown eyes. I held her and kissed her and breastfed her. She was born at 7:46 pm and stayed with me until after 9.
I had her stay with me most of the time because I was breastfeeding. I regret the first night that I had them take her around 3 am because they gave her a bottle. After that I kept her with me, but I only stayed at the hospital a total of 47 hours. Things were hard when I first got home and I am really glad that my mom dad and brother helped me out. They were a great blessing. The first month with Melody seemed like one unending day. After four weeks she woke up and revealed a new person. Sometimes I feel like I am doing everything wrong... but eventually I know that God is taking care of me and my daughter. So long as we seek Him we will find Him.
