Birth Story

After all failed attempts at trying to naturally induce labour, I was booked in for a hospital induction on Saturday 15th March, 15 days overdue according to my newly appointed Gyno/Ob.
Saturday March 15th
I awoke at 3am (on the dot!) Saturday morning with a painful contraction thinkin 'could this be it' .... excited that we might escape the hospital induction in the nick of time! They continued at regular 10 minute intervals until my gyno appt. at 9:30 am (from here I was meant to go straight to hospital to get the lovely gel). He confirmed that YES... I WAS INDEED IN LABOUR!!! ..... however as I was already progressing, ever so slowly, on my own it would be less invasive to continue labour naturally however, if she still was not out by the morning the inducing drugs would be needed. He rang the hospital and told them to expect us sometime during the day!?!
My contractions continued at regular 10 minute intervals throughout the day getting increasingly stronger, and by about 4pm I needed to involuntarily drop to the ground each time one came. We headed off to the hospital.
On arrival we were taken into an observation room and hooked up to a CTG monitor. My contractions were still coming at regular 10 minute intervals, I was regreting laying on my back for this monitoring. The midwife on duty then did a VE and said that we hadn't progressed much further than in the morning, I was frustrated as I was in quite a bit of pain and I knew I had a high pain tolerance.
As we were only a 12 minute drive from the hospital we went home to be in a more comfortable environment HAHAHA!!!
By 11pm they were coming about every 7 minutes and my body was starting to shake with each contraction and I was getting a bit teary so I told Dayle I'd rather be at the hospital.... at this point I'd probably had less than 10 hours sleep all week which wasn't helping.
We arrived at the hospital where we were given our birthing suite and I was hooked up to the CTG monitor, this time I sat on my knees so I could lean forward when a contraction came... so much better than flat on your back. As we had till the morning to birth naturally... without medical help, I was offered a sedative to try and rest for a while as sunday could potentially be another long day labouring. After initially refusing the sedative 5 minutes later I accepted however I'm not sure what if anything it did! The midwife then offered me the gas and oxygen which I also initially declined and then ....you guessed it... 5 mins later Dayle was running out the door asking for it, as much for him as me I think hehe ! ..... he'd been daydreaming for weeks about sitting in the spa, sucking on the gas and drinking a beer... giving birth is a breeze!!!
Sunday March 16th
By 6 am I was mentally focusing on my dr arriving at 8am with the gel to speed things up, it was like an eternity! Dayle ran the gigantic bath and wheeled the mobile gas into the bathroom, the water really helped with the pain for the next hour or so... Dayle and I were taking turns with the gas.... his turns being my lulls, we had the lights dimmed and some relaxing music playing and I felt I regained some inner strength for the home stretch of the birth at this point.
My Dr, in classic Dr style :D arrived at 9:30, NOT 8AM!, he did a quick VE and said "I don't know why things arn't progressing!?!" ....not what you want to hear after 30.5 hours of labour contractions!! The gel was inserted and I was told to lay still for about half an hour so it didn't run out. The midwife then tried to put an IV in my arm without success so called the aniethitist to put it in, this was done in case I needed a blood transfusion as my iron was still low. Contractions were closer together now and were intensifying.... Dayle ran the bath to see if the water would help with pain relief again..... it was a race to the bath between contractions. I remember listening to Angus and Julia Stone on the CD player....... this was the last bit of music I remember hearing! Contractions were getting closer and closer together with little respite inbetween, and exhaustion was starting to set in. The midwife came in and asked if I needed something for the pain and I just cried... I was finding it really hard to focus. As I'm allergic to pethadine I was given a shot of morphine, I don't think the morphine helped much at all!
I was moaning loudly through contractions which shocked the hell out of me as with my two previous births I was silent and could mentally control the pain.... this worried me as I was feeling out of control. Labour continued like this untill 4pm when my dr arrived to do another VE and as I still had a long way to go he asked the midwife to brake my waters. OMG the relief was very momentarily.... and I do mean very momentarily!! ... I felt a warm gush and then contractions really got moving again. They were coming one on top of the other with only about 30 seconds in between to recover... and I was deliriously exhausted. I have to say I cannot remember alot between now and going to theatre about 4-5 hours later however I wouldn't have liked to be another mummy in a room near me... I was in soo much pain I don't even remember opening my eyes.
The midwife came back and asked if I wanted the epidural, I said yes instantly. The epidural took a while to administer as the contractions were close and making it difficult. I sat on the edge of the bed and squeezed a pillow tightly. This is where my recollection of events starts becoming very hazy and holes begin appearing.... my hubby is happy for this.
Dayle tells me I just about passed out for the next 30 mins and he skulled about 10 glasses of water.... he hadn't left my side for a second. Then, as quick as the pain had gone...it was back!
By 8pm I was still stuck at 8 cm, I had been having contractions about 30 seconds apart for 4 hours now,....and like I said its all a blur, hence Dayle helped me write this story a little! My Dr started the oxytocin drip at this point to try and get me to dilate those last two itsy bitsy cms......instantly my 30 second respite dissapeared and I had what is called a 'tonic contraction'- which is a continuous contraction, I was screaming and balling at the same time. I also had the most horrible pain in my upper right abdomen and back........later I was told that I was experiencing an 'intrapartum haemorrage' - in other words I was bleeding alot due to my placenta tearing off my uterus. I was prepared for theatre however had to wait for my doc to show up......everyone was swearing cause he took so long. I was given yet another drug to stop contractions and wheeled down to theatre.
At 9:03 pm on Sunday 16th March, 2008, beautiful little Zari Kira Banks was finally born.....she was carried around to me and I kissed her gorgeous little forehead. She weighed 9lbs 2oz and was 57cm long.
Doctor later said that Zaris head was in the wrong posi... and she was never gonna get out!, aside from other compications.
Well.....our birth plan was thrown out the window, another life lesson!! ... we cannot control every situation; outcome - a perfect little girl!!!
10 days later we are all doing well and recovering nicely.........aside from lack of sleep :D XX
