I was scheduled for induction Saturday the 21st of March. I arrived at 11am. I was a week over due, with no real signs of labor. I was maybe 1 cm dialated, my cervix was soft. Since it was soft they gave me the option of either the cervidel (cervix softening gel) or a balloon catheder, since the balloon was considered more of a natural option I decided to try it. It's supposed to pop out at 3 cm and make contractions start on their own. The practicing mid wife took almost 10mins trying to insert it, finally the mid wife stepped in and she tried to insert it for about 5 minutes. It was very uncomfortable. And hard to walk around with.

It popped out in about 2 hours, which was good progress. They checked me and I was 3 cm. Once it came out, I was so relieved feeling. They waited about an hour before starting the pitocin. Seeing that I wasn't progressing much on my own. The really bad contractions didn't start till around 11 at night, I was at 4cm. So I asked for an epidural. The anesthiologest got to my room fairly quick. It was such a disgusting feeling, like bubbling liquid inserted into my spine. It was almost spastic feeling. She did it failry quick, and it started to work right away. Unfortunately it wore off after 30mins. My contractions were full blown, and I was about 5cms. So it was a big shock to feel them 100% again.

Lucikly after an hour they said they would re-do the epidural. It worked, except the baby was in a little distress..His heart rate was dipping after the peak of the contraction and not rising fast enough after the contraction went down, plus they thought he had the cord around his neck or that pressure was put on it if I layed on my back or my left side, so I had to stay on my right side for the rest of the labor. This made my entire left side void of any pain relief. Plus I was on oxygen the whole time, this was really annoying! I had to take deep breaths for SO long, just to make sure my little one was getting enough oxygen, I kept getting light headed.

Oh they broke my water at 12, and there was meconium(sp?) in the water, so that also could have been stress on the baby. They inserted internal monitoring also, which was uncomfortable as well. So I wasn't making much progress and by the next morning, Sunday, they said I was most likely going to get a c-section. Luikly I had the most amazing delivery nurse, who was very anti c-section. He said that we would do everything to try to not have that happen. Eventually, I was having such a high risk labor/birth that he had to get rid of all his other patients, and he stayed with me the whole time. Finally they gave me one hour to make progress, and if I didn't make significant progress they said I would need a c-section. I started crying because I was so nervous about surgery.

At 11:00am they checked me and I was almost 9cm. They had me do some practice pushing. And then at 11:45 I began actually pushing. Unfortunatly, my baby was "sunny side up", so his back was pressing on my back. That's another reason why the contractions were so horrible, I had a lot of back labor!! So, they decided to use the vacuum on my baby. I had an amazing doctor do the procedure, and he was very calm and relaxing. I did have to get cut, but I guess it's better than tearing. I felt all the contractions, they turned off the epidural 2 hours before pushing. Plus I never had the urge to push down, or that I had to go to the bathroom, which made it really hard to actually push when it came to it. Luckily the suction never popped off his head, they only attatched it once. I hear they won't suction the head more than twice. So I really had to push because I didn't want to go through the whole labor, just to have a c-section!

My baby was pulled out at 1:17pm Sunday afternoon! Weighing 6lbs 9oz, Length 21in. He cried right away, and it was so cute! I was really worried about the quality of his health since I didn't find out I was pregnant until 3 months into it, and I had been drinking during that time. I stopped right away, but it was on my mind through the whole pregnancy. He scored 8/9 on his apgar tests, and didn't have any of that green poop in his lungs! So he was very healthy, and not too affected by his birth. They let my husband cut the cord, which I was thrilled the doctor asked if he wanted to, since the midwife told us she wouldn't let him do it since it was a high risk birth.

I was in labor for 25 hours, and it was the worst experience of my life. I will never forget the pain and agony I went through (even after the labor too!). I love my little Jackson, and I'm just thrilled he is a healthy baby :)!!
