Dylan's Birth Story.
I'd been having pains since Sunday 15th May 2011 and was getting pretty sick of it by Wednesday 25th May. I was beginning to feel like I'd never go into labour! I'd had three bloody shows and had been slowly loosing my mucous plug for over two weeks by then. By around 7pm on Wednesday 25th the pains started to become regular but by about midnight they'd started to wear off again so I went to bed. At 2.30am on May 26th I woke up with a very painful contraction followed by a few more but then they started to die down again and I drifted in and ou of sleep till around 6am when I woke up and decided that the pains seemed to be coming more regularly and this could finally be the start of "established labour."
I got out of bed, got myself washed and dressed then woke my daughter up and got her washed and dressed then made her breakfast. It wasn't easy to get her ready myself between contractions but my husband was being impossible! I couldn't wake him up for the life of me...I think by this point he was sick of me saying I was in labour only for the contractions to stop two hours later! Lol. I eventually managed to get him out of bed by about 7.20 and by 8.30 my Dad had taken Emma to their house and Wayne, myself and my Mum were at the hospital. The midwife checked my cervix and said I wasn't even 3cm yet and I should go home and come back later if I was still in pain. (The hospital was packed and I think they needed my bed!) I was feeling really disheartened and disappointed that I still wasn't in labour. We walked home from the hospital (it's about 3 miles from there to my house) as I was hoping this might speed things up a little. It was slow going walking back from the hospital...Wayne had to carry the car seat and my hospital bag, I was having contractions every three minutes and my Mum has a very bad back and can't walk far or fast...we must have looked a right sight hobbling down the street! Lol.
We got home and I started jumping on my exercise ball and running up and down the stairs hoping to kick start labour. My Dad brought Emma back home (he had to go to work in the afternoon) then Mum and Dad went back to their house. Wayne called my Mum-in-law and she came round to take Emma to her house.
By about 3pm the contractions were even more painful than they had been and were still coming every 3-5 minutes (as they had been since 6am that morning!) We decided to head back to the hospital just to see if anything was happening. When we got to the hospital I was examined and the midwife said I was 5cm dilated. She gave me some gas and air for the pain and hooked me up to a traccing machine. Wayne called my Mum and she came back to the hospital so she could be there for the big event!
I can't remember much beyond that point (that gas and air is good stuff! Lol.) I vaguely remember the midwife offering me pethidine and me saying no because it would hurt the baby...she laughed at me and said she was a midwife and wasn't going to give me anything that would hurt my baby...I ended up getting the pethadine so I must have agreed to it anyway! They had to break my waters and put a clip on the babies head too as the tracing machine wasn't picking up his heart very well. Each contraction made me feel like I was in a dream or floating outside my body when I "came round" from each one I was asking Wayne and my mum the same set of questions;
"Have I had pethidine?"
"Did they break my waters?"
"Did they put a clip on the babies head?"
"How long have we been here?"
"Have I already asked these questions?"
"How long has it been since my last contraction?"
I had to ask these questions as I wasn't sure if I was dreaming or if it was all real each time I came round from a contraction and wasn't sure if I'd already asked the questions or if I'd just imagined it!
At 5.30pm my Mum noticed my face had gone red. She asked me if I was pushing to which I replied "I HAVE TO!" Wayne ran out and grabbed a passing midwife who ran in just in time to see Dylan shooting out! I pushed for a total of one minute! He came out so fast that he was blue and they had to quickly take him away and give him some oxygen but he quickly turned pink and was given to me. He weighed 6lbs 3oz and is just perfect! I'm totally in love with him!
