Sadie-Grace`s birthstory
Tuesday night around 7 I started getting some mild cramping. I thought it was strange, but nothing painful. In the next two hours I noticed pink mucous discharge, a little at a time. Around two, the cramps seemed to be getting into a rhythm, but still not painful. I woke Jeff up at three to feed horses, take care of animals, etc. I took a shower, shaved, and finished packing my bag. We got to the hospital around 4am, and I told Jeff to leave bags in the car, they`d probably check me and send us home. I was at a 2.5, but having real contractions so they kept me. Around 6 am, the doctor checked me and i was at a 6 so they gave me an IV with antibiotic because I was strep b positive. Labor was all in my back. They gave me a shot of nubaine, but the only thing that helped was counterpressure during contractions. Jeff was great and applied pressure with the contractions. The nubaine wore off when I was about 8 dilated, but they said that I couldn`t have another because I`d soon be pushing. We`re not sure when my water actually broke, it happened during contractions but because of the blood and stuff there was not a definite `water break.` All we know is that is obviously broke. Around 8am I tried using the birthing ball but it caused Sadie`s heartbeat to drop, they said I was probably bouncing on her head!! By 8:30 I started pushing. I yelled and screamed, but not to anyone in particular. At one point I told my doctor this birthing process has a major design flaw. She crowned and my whole body starting shaking and wretching and I thought I was going to throw up or pass out from the pain. They put me on oxygen because my breathing was so irregular. My contractions stopped, with her head right there, for like ten minutes. DH was so worried that something was wrong. I was enjoying the respite, my body was on overdrive and seriously just needed a break. Then the contractions started again and she was out in two pushes. My doctor said look (my eyes were closed pretty much the whole time.) I opened my eyes and this purple screaming baby was hanging in the air over me. I asked `is it a boy or a girl?` It was a girl. They put her on oxygen for a minute and gave her to me. Dh and I both started crying. Her apgar scores were 8 and 9. And it`s all true, it was simultaneously the most painful and most enjoyable moment of my life. Now because it was April 1st, people didn`t believe us until we sent out pics. Also, my labor was so short no one even knew I was at the hospital. I felt great the day before, went shopping (to buy her coming home outfit no less!) went out to lunch, etc. It was such a fast labor, I have some mild tearing, but nothing too painful. Good luck to all of you expectant mommies reading this, trust me, labor can start in the blink of any eye with no warning signs at all. I really didn`t even know if it had started or not. She`s breastfeeding like a champ and now the real work begins:)
