Katelyn-Marie-Sadler`s birthstory
Sorry if this is long, but so was the labour! I went to my doctor the morning of the 4th, and was told to go to the hospital for induction since my blood pressure was high and not going down. Got to the hospital (2:45pm) and they decided that since cervadil isn`t the safest for high blood pressure, they would use a foley (balloon they put PAST your cervix, fill with water, and wait for the weight to open the cervix). EXTREMELY uncomfortable to have them put it in, but I managed (put in at 5:10pm) with laughing gas - hated that stuff, made me feel awful! It usually takes between 6 and 24 hours for this to work, but I went for 1cm to 4cm in 1.5 hours and it fell out.
Next was the oxytocin at 8:05pm. They started me at the minimum and over the next 6 hours, got me up to the max. I still hadn`t gotten an epidural - it was hurting, but still manageable. They told me the next step was to break my water so I DID take the epidural, afraid of the pain I`d feel if I didn`t. Turns out it didn`t matter...
Got the epidural at 2:00am, water was broken at 2:50am, and started getting a lot of contractions. Problem was, for some reason (still unknown), the epidural didn`t work on one spot on my lower uterus, so ALL the pain was radiating to 1 spot (my husbands time line just says `HELL` on the timeline he was keeping at 3:50 so I assume that`s when it got bad)!! Poor Kevin - hated seeing me in so much pain and didn`t know what to do. I guess I just laid there moaning and crying... I think I was in my own little world. They came back over the next few hours and kept giving me more of the epidural thinking the pain would go away... I was out of it and not really aware of what was going on. Instead of working, something happened and it started giving me back spasms. SO MUCH WORSE then any pain I had felt to that point, or any other point during the rest of the labour. I was 9cm at 8:00am on the 5th.
I hadn`t slept in 30 hours, and apparently doctors and nurses were in and out, but I was in so much pain I barely knew anyone was there, except when they had to keep flipping me from side to side because baby`s heart rate was going down (they had to do all the work since I was having the spasms which were agonizing, and the rest of me was so frozen from all the top-ups of the epidural - I was still frozen 6 hours later!! They decided to put water back into my uterus to try to help at some point, so another foley went in, along with a catheter, and then I got a really high fever so they started giving me antibiotics (same as they would give if positive for strep B). I started throwing up at some point, and shaking uncontrollably, but was told at 10:30 that a c-section probably wasn`t necessary (there was a good chance of it a few hours before since her heart rate kept dropping)
Eventually (at 10:45am), I fell asleep. 15 minutes they woke me up telling me baby had to come out NOW. She was born 6 minutes later... vaccuum to pull her into the birth canal, forceps to turn her since she was backwards, and 5 of the strongest pushes I could possibly do and I had my angel. I couldn`t hold her right away due to the back spasms, but after about 10 minutes the pain was gone. Had an episiotomy, but no idea how many stitches (they wouldn`t tell me, but I`m still pretty sore). Stayed in the hospital 3 days because my pressure wouldn`t go down and I`m on meds now. It was a really really tough labour and delivery, but worth every second... she`s an angel and we couldn`t be happier!! We are SO in love!!
