I checked into the hospital for an elective induction around 12:30 pm on Sunday, Jan 18, fully expecting to have my little Jiovanni with me in a matter of a few hours.
Got all situated in my room and things got started. I was very anxious about getting my iv because it has been very hard to keep my vein still the last few times I had to have one in my arm, but the nurse was awesome and we found another vein in my other arm and she got it in on the first try (Yay!). A sign of good things to come I thought, lol! Got my pitocin started after the dr came in and checked me. 2cm dialated at the time. Pit drip alarm kept going off until they finally found out it wasn't even going in. Finally got it right and started over, so beginning time is 2pm.Took a while to get into a good contraction pattern and I started feeling them enough to want some pain meds. Got some Nubaine and nurse told me that another patient was getting her epi so if I wanted mine then it would be a good time while the dr was already up on the floor. Sounded good to me.
4pm: Got my epi and was feeling comfy. Contractions stopped. Got them going again after a while and got checked. 2cm. So the dr said she was going to do a foley bulb induction where they insert this thing into my cervix and blow it up with saline to dialate it. I suggested just breaking my water and they were acting like he was still too high up to do that. ?. If my dr wouldn't have been on vaca that would have been the first thing he would have done. So, we try this bulb thing.
5am: After hours and hours they check and see whats happening. Not much. 2-3cm. The nurse suggested breaking my water but the resident was acting like she didn't want to, but she FINALLY did. Went from 2-3cm to 4-5cm instantly. By now I'm on my second bag of meds for my epi. So tired of turning from side to side because everytime I have to turn its a big ordeal and I've never had an epi in this long since my last two labors were only around six hours.
7am: My fave nurse Sue comes in, who I had with my last two kids! Yay! So happy! She's very experienced and is awesome! She checks me and tells me his head is not in the right position so she has me lay on my side a certain way to try to get him to rotate. I'm about 6cm now.
8:30am: The Dr who is covering for my Dr while he is away comes in with a different resident. They check me and I'm 6-7cm and Jiovanni's head is still crooked. Sue (my wonderful nurse) puts me back into my "special" position on my side. My second bag of meds for my epi is gone and needs to be replaced. When she comes back in to do it I tell her I'm starting to feel my contractions and I'm not supposed to. So she hurry's to get the meds back going. I'm now telling her I'm feeling "that" pressure and its starting to hurt and can she top off my epi. She checks me and I'm 10cm! Yeah, it figures as soon as my epi meds just get back going there won't be any time for them to work fully. She calls for everyone and I'm feeling shit I never felt before since all my epi's have never had time to wear off. I'm starting to bite peoples heads off because I need to push and everyone seems like their moving SO SLOW! When they do pay attention to me and tell me to push I regret I wanted to push because it HURT. I knew this would happen since my pg was pretty easy and all my epi's have worked all the way through till the very end. Lucky me. So I get mad and push push push, breathe, push push push, so on and so forth. I feel like I'm about to split in two halves, but I keep pushing. Contraction is over and there is tons of pressure. Next contraction I'm determined to get this boy out. I push my hardest while everyone is cheering me on until I hear them saying his head is out and just blow. Yeah right! I think getting the shoulders out was the worst. I felt like a pop and he was out! 8:56am, 01/19/09, Martin Luther King Jr Day. It seemed like it took that damn resident forever to put him on my belly, but when she did my son was beautiful. He wasn't even bloody and had no vernix on him. He just looked wet and perfect. I cut the cord myself. He was crying but as soon as I started talking to him he instantly stopped and he was holding my finger looking content. I was admiring my lil guy and all the dr's were saying something about me bleeding too much and they were moving fast, so I started getting a little scared. Well, I guess I had a blood clot stuck in my cervix, but they got it out and I pushed out the placenta and stuff and all was well.
19 hours. My 4th and longest labor. But he's here now and I'm blessed with another lil boy.
I came home Tuesday evening since thats when I had planned on coming home, even though I didn't have him until Monday. I could have stayed until Wednesday, but I was ready to get out of there. Happy to be home, but feeling extremly tired. I had a fall on the ice on my porch steps so my butcheek and left hip are really sore on top of my cramping and my epi area. But thats what pain meds are for, hehe!
Good luck to all the mommies who are still waiting!
