Penny`s birthstory

Well, I was typing away on this site, when my annoying gas pains just wouldn`t quit, so I called the hospital and they said to pop in and they`d have a look at me. I called Pat and he got the afternoon off work to look after our little 5-year old, Tycho. Midwife did an internal, and I was 2cm dilated and not effaced, and the midwife and I both agreed the pains didn`t feel like labor. But after some procrastination, and consultation with the ObGyn in Cairns, they decided to send me off to Cairns by ambulance.

Well, in the ambulance, I went into labor. Definite contractions. But on assessment, another internal revealed that nothing had changed, so they said they`d wait and see. If I progressed, they`d put me down for an immediate C-sec, and if not they`d schedule one for later in the week. Suddenly at about 9:30, there was an opening in theatre so they took me in. Penny was delivered just after 10:30pm. The spinal block was awful - it went too high and slowed my heart, so they had to inject some narcotic which made my mouth dry, and my face itchy. I was all shaky. Anyway, she was born, I was stitched back up, and taken to recovery. They said if I sat up, I`d be fine within 15 minutes, but it took over an hour.

Anyway, Penny`s blood sugar was low, so she was given a tiny feed of formula while I was in recovery, but then onto breast. Her second blood sugar was fine, and continued to improve with every check. She`s now feeding really well. Her weight dropped about 6%, but the doctor said anything up to 10% is fine, so I was transferred by ambulance back home to Mossman this afternoon. Once the doctor here checked me, I was discharged with a box of paracetamol. Home and happy!! Have another check-up on Saturday, but so glad to be home. Kids are, of course, very excited!!
