Gavin-John`s birthstory

We scheduled an induction because I was feeling so awful; I couldn`t imagine another week of pregnancy. I told the doctor to schedule it as early as possible because I knew I wouldn`t sleep the night before. We were planning on going in at 4:30am. We got a call from Labor and Delivery at 3:30am telling us to call back at 8 am. They were very busy. Needless to say, I didn`t sleep a wink. Called back at 8am, still no room for us so we waited to call back at 1pm. Tried to sleep but maybe got 20 minutes. Called back at 1 and finally got a go ahead to come in at 5. We got there at 5, I was dilated to 2 and 50% effaced and I was already have labor contractions on my own. My doctor inserted a balloon catheter into my cervix to dilate to 4. We got that done at close to 7pm almost immediately the contractions I was having got much stronger and I was in pain but it was manageable. An hour later patocin was started. We waited for this balloon to fall out, it was supposed to take about 4 hours, my doctor came back at 11pm to check the progress. She pulled the balloon out and I was a close to 5cm. She then broke my water and that was a weird sensation. Very warm gush all over the place. My doctor left the room and warned that now would be a good time to get an epidural. I thought the contractions I was having already were strong and manageable and didn`t believe that they would be that bad however, about 10 minutes after my doctor left all hell broke loose. I started to have VERY strong contractions. I started in bed and found that the best way to get through them was to stand up at the side of the bed and rock through them. I spent the next hour battling over getting the epidural and decided since I hadn`t slept in about 24 hours that it would probably be the only was I could get back in bed and lay down. I finally asked for the epidural around 1:30am and had to wait an hour. Getting the epidural was the best decision I made. I was able to get back in bed and at least rest my eyes a little. It`s hard to sleep through the blood pressure machine going every 15 minutes, also the machine had an alarm that kept going off because my BP was so low. So at 2am I had the epidural and rested and at about 4:00am I started to have intense pain in my left side, I called the nurse and was told to press the epi button again and wait 20 minutes, I did that with no relief. Called the nurse again and was told to press the button again, I did and waited another 20 minutes and it still didn`t work, in that time I was starting to feel ill. I called the nurse again and told her I was still having the pain and she was going to call the anesthesiologist to top me off. I was sure I was feeling sick because I was ready to push so I asked her to check me first. Sure enough about 6am I was 10 cm and the baby was at +1. I didn`t have the urge to push and was told that I could wait for the baby to come lower if I didn`t feel the urge. My doctor arrived at 7am and we started pushing at 7:15. Pushing the baby out was the hardest thing I have ever done. I couldn`t feel where to push or how hard I was pushing, it felt like forever and after an hour and a half of pushing I felt defeated. My doctor said she could get a vacuum and that she really only used it as a last resort I said `go get it!” I had nothing left and was feeling like this was never going to happen. My husband wanted me to try a couple more times and it only took a two pushes to get him out! At 8:43am Gavin was born! As he was half way out I was told to look down at my baby, I was so overwhelmed and mad, I refused! Gavin came out and was placed on my chest...I was so overcome with the feeling of relief and disbelief. I hadn’t slept in well over 24 hours and was disoriented. But there he was on my chest, gooey and beautiful! I suffered a 2nd degree tear and lots of bleeding. I had to be given a medicine to stop bleeding and to get my uterus hard again. I had lots of bruising and swelling that made it almost impossible to change from any position. The past 5 days have been hard and painful but I am finally feeling like things are looking up down there! Labor was the hardest and most rewarding thing I have experienced in my life. Like they always say all the pain and trauma make your prize that much better. Good luck to you all! May you have happy healthy labors and babies!
