Birth Story:
Well i loved reading other peoples birth stories when i was waiting for mine to happen so I'm probably going to go in to far too much detail here but I'm writing it for me too because i don't want to forget any detail of the wonderful experience of bringing my son into the world!
It all started on Wednesday night, after some nookie with my hubby i started contractions but nothing too regular and they subsided by 4am. The next day i went to the doctors for my weekly check up, told him about the contractions and he checked me to show i was 3cm dilated and 70% effaced already, he offered to do the membrane sweep which i jumped at cause i really wanted to meet my boy that weekend, had my heart set on it! And Sean was off work so it was good timing.
After the sweep i lost tons of my mucus plug and had a few light contractions. then Friday, NOTHING. By Friday evening it was time to get pro active, more nookie with the hubby and contractions started again by 11pm, really painful and 3 minutes apart, we packed our bags and were ready to go but i wanted to wait till my waters had broken, i lay down at around 4am and when i opened my eyes again it was 7am, no contractions, i was totally heart broken!
All of Saturday i had no contractions at all, i was willing him on in my tummy, telling him he had to come this weekend, i'd convinced myself it was time even though he had 10 days to go for his estimated arrival date.
That evening more nookie with the hubby! I'm lucky he's so awesome!haha
Contractions started again but didn't seem as strong as Friday night, I chose to lay in bed and ride them out incase it all subsided again.
At 2.40am i woke and sat up in bed and something gushed out of me! I ran to the toilet and sure enough it was my waters, so i woke up hubby who i had to convince it was the real thing and we grabbed our bags which we'd packed the night before! Suddenly the contractions were so hardcore and really close together, the car journey felt like a lifetime, being sat down was agony and a police road block didn't help when we got close to the hospital, it was like something from a movie! We eventually got the the hospital about 3.30am and i could barely walk, I was checked out by a nurse in the reception room and hooked up to monitors, i could barely answer her questions and was panting like crazy, after what felt like hours they admitted me to the triage ward and i changed into a gown and was made to lie on a bed which was the last thing i wanted! Poked with an IV and blood taken, the whole time there was a lady on the other side of the curtain screaming bloody murder, begging for drugs! Not what i needed to hear!
My whole body was shaking with each contraction and the pain was unbearable, i knew when each contraction was coming and dreaded it! My eyes started to tear and i just knew i couldn't do it without pain medication even though i knew natural was best, i wanted to remember this experience and not feel on the edge of death! Dramatic i know but thats how i felt.
After what seemed like a lifetime they wheeled me to the birthing room and the contractions started making me yell in pain, i finally gave in to the epidural offers by 6am but had to wait for the guy to finish with another lady, that hour was the longest hour of my life! But as soon as the epidural was started the pain went instantly, i was so relieved! I'd dilated to 5cm by then and things kinda stopped, after 2 hours they put me on pitocin. It was just the weirdest thing watching my contractions on the monitors but not feeling anything but a little tightening. My legs were totally numb and i could just wiggle my toes. So sean and i watched some MTV and waited it out.
By 12.30pm i was fully dilated and the nurses said it was time to push, i couldn't feel my legs at all so they had to hold them up for me, very dignified! By now though i really didn't care, just wanted to meet my boy! He was so close!
I pushed for an hour and the nurses brought me a mirror over so i could see his head, it was kinda gross but so encouraging to see how close he was! When the doctor was called things started to get serious, i kept on pushing and he was moving but the head just wouldn't pop out! So he had to cut me a little, mostly as everything was so swollen! Gross!
The babies heart rate had really slowed down and things had to move fast! I got scared! The doc cut me some more and then in the next push his little head came out with the cord wrapped around his neck tightly, he made me stop while he pulled the cord off and then in the next push he just slipped out. It was 2.04pm.He cried right away, well it was more of a gargle! He was instantly put on my chest and the emotions i felt were intense, i couldn't believe the beautiful little guy was here, he peered up at me and gazed at my face through the cries, i started to tear up, but only one eye cried because i was so exhausted! After i held him for a while and delivered the placenta he was taken to the side of the room to be checked. I missed him instantly and wanted him back. His tiny hands and feet were blue and his body beet red! When he came back to me he was all wrapped up and just perfect. Sean held him for a while why i was stitched up, I still had no feeling at all down there so it was just fine.
After an hour i started to get feeling back and Ollie had his first bath, he loved having his hair washed under the tap and made the cutest cooing noises.
The first night was great, he didn't cry, such a super chilled out baby, just loves being held close and took to nursing right away. I'm so proud of him. We stayed in the hospital 24 hours and couldn't wait to get him home.
Here we all are now with our 6 pound baby boy who's perfect in every way!
