Labour Story:

At 0430 in the morning, I started to feel painful cramps in my abdomen. I didn't think much of them at first, thinking it might be my bowels, but when I had 3 in a row, with an interval of 15 mins, I thought they might be contractions. I got up and went to the bathroom, at which point my waters broke and I started leaking fluid. I got my husband to ring the birthing centre, who told me to come in within the hour.

On arrival to hospital, at 0530 I was placed in a room, and the midwives hooked me up to the baby monitor. My contractions were now 10 mins apart, and I was sucking on the gas every time one arrived. On the doctor's round, they checked on me and found I was 2cm dilated. My blood pressure had also started to rise. The doctors were a bit concerned, so started me on a hydralizine drip to lower by BP. I was also hooked to IV fluids.

After about 6 hours of labour, I was no further dilated and my BP had still not settled. The doctors decided on a epidural - mainly because of my BP rising. The epidural was placed soon after, which worked for a short while. I felt more relaxed and wasn't in any pain for about an hour and a half. Soon though, I started to feel contractions again, which were now extremely painful. My left leg was numb but I could feel my right leg. The anaesthetist came back and adjusted the epidural twice, but this did not seem to make much difference to my pain. It was at this point the doctors decided on an emergency caeserean. They were very worried about me as a catheter was inserted in my bladder but I had no urine output for 2 hours, and my blood pressure was still rising. I was diagnosed with pre-eclampsia and whisked to theatre at 1330. I had been in labour for 9 hours at this point. I was in so much pain on the way to theatre, but my husband was there to hold my hand and help me through the contractions - he was amazing - a tower of strength.

I was given a spinal anaesthetic in the theatre, and could not feel anything from the neck down. A screen was put up to block mine and my husband's view. I felt a little bit anxious - at the paralysis, and the worry that my little boy was going to be ok. I was taking big breaths with the oxygen, and the nurses were there to reassure me, as was my husband, Jason. After strange pulling and tugging sensations which seemed to last a long time (but was just 20 mins), I heard my little boy let out a little cry, and the surgeon showed me him quickly, before taking him off to do the APGAR score. Jason was allowed to go over and take photos, and once Ashton was cleaned, was given to Jason to hold. The time Ashton was born was 1420.

Jason laid Ashton on my chest as I was being sutured - me and Ashton held each other's gaze and I said I loved him and that I was his mummy. I was taken to recovery soon after - where several nurses was fussing over me and the baby! Ashton was put to my breast soon after, and started suckling immediately.

I was taken up to the ward, where I was put on morphine PCA, and was monitored all night every hour for my blood pressure. I was kept in hospital for 6 days due to the pre-eclampsia - I was seen by renal specialists before discharge. On discharge, I was put on 2 different blood pressure medications, and given several numbers to call and have a few appointments to attend. I have to see my GP every week for blood pressure checks. But little Ashton is fine, and passed all his hospital health checks with flying colours, he is 100% perfect! We are very very blessed.
