Carissa-Elle`s birthstory
I had a paper due and decided to stay up all night starting July 8th to finish it. I was nearing the conclusion of my paper around 6 a.m. on July 9th and had an urge to use the bathroom like a normal night. Then, all of a sudden I felt water gush out between my legs and ran to the bathroom because I wasn`t sure if it was my water or if I just lost my control to hold my urine. It kept running through my head though that it would be impossible for it to be my urine because there was so much liquid and it smelled sweet instead. Soon, I started having contractions 6 minutes a part. After calling my aunt and e-mailing my English teacher, we left for the hospital. I went up to triage and they examined me to confirm the water rupture and found that I was 4 cm dilated.
Next, I finally made it to labor and delivery. My plan still included to go as natural as possible which was working out great for the first couple of hours. THEN...they said my contractions were too far apart, so they needed to induce with pitocin. We all know what pitocin does and also the fact that contractions hit a lot harder. I always told myself if I were to be induced I`d consider an epidural. However, being there I decided to still go with my plan of having no pain medication. During labor, they had difficulty keeping track of my baby`s heart rate. It seemed each time I had an contraction they`d lose it. I was eventually 6 cm. and my contractions were less then a minute apart, they started to hit one right after another. I was in definite pain. 2 hours later, they put an internal monitor to get her heart rate and an hour after that I was around 8 to 9 cm. Then all of a sudden, the doctor came in, said they can`t get a steady heart rate, and said I needed a C-Section. Then within the next 15 minutes I was wheeled into an EMERGENCY C-SECTION, heard nurses and doctors from ten directions around me telling me what to sign, to drink this, fold arms, etc. I couldn`t possibly concentrate on all ten of them at the same time, especially in the middle of my contractions when they didn`t want to give me the shot to stop them because it might counteract with the Spinal Block. Then, a couple seconds later, I got my spinal block, they asked me if I could feel pain anymore, then I felt some tugging and less than 5 minutes later I had a baby!! I wanted to stare at her forever, but ended up falling asleep because my body was so numb and exhausted. I woke up in recovery and got moved up into my own room when I could eventually feel my legs again.
REFLECTION:
I can`t believe I went 11 hours with induced labor without pain medication to end up getting a Spinal Block for the C-Section. lol. If I knew I would end up getting a C-section, I never would of went through all that PAIN. Also, I was open to a possible C-section but after delivery I felt kind of sad that I couldn`t push and be a participant to my daughters delivery. What made me felt better though is that we did it to possibly save her life.
