I was booked for an induction at 8am at the local hospital where I delivered my first daughter. My care was temporarily handed over to the attending OB instead of my midwives until labour was established. The OB was an experienced albeit brusk woman....very matter of fact and not really personable...whatever.
I was 1-2cm dilated 3/4 effaced and very soft. She said I was moderately favourable and suggested a Prostin Gel (the faster acting kind of the 2 avail) I was monitored for 90min before being sent home til 330pm. The gel initially caused cramping and stronger contractions but they subsided. My husband and I went to the mall, walked around, had lunch. At 330 I was back at hospital and monitored until OB came in at 4pm. Funny....nothing had changed until about that time, when the contractions had suddenly become a bit more regular....and a bit stronger. She manhandled my cervix and stated it was now even more favourable and was open to breaking my water. She stated I would likely need a Pitocin drip after that to start regular labour.
My midwife tried to break my water, but with me being only 2cm dilated and the cervix having moved further posterior with my baby having dropped further....she was unable. The OB (eeeeeeek) came back in and once again rather roughly but expertly broke my water. Small gush/dribble.
Within 1 hour it became evident that I was entering active labour. No Pitocin induction would be necessary!! Contractions were much stronger now....had to breathe through them and coming every 3min. This lasted 3 hours and with each progressing hour....the pain was mounting. By 8pm I was checked and found to be 5-6cm dilated. I continued persevering through the contractions which were starting to require ALL my attention and focus. My best friend Alice was there and my hubby. She got my cellphone out and brought a picture up of my daughter for me to focus on....my hubby offered counter pressure as I found it most comfortable to labour standing leaning on a cart for support. By 9pm I started shaking....I was getting close to freaking out....if I didn't focus really hard on the contractions they would escalate into an enormous amount of pain....clenching vs. letting go was REALLY PAINFUL!! If I could just breathe.....let my knees bend and let the whole undercarriage relax I could handle it....but barely.....I WANTED AN EPIDURAL!! NOW!!!
The anesthesiologist was called....it was now on order.
My girlfriend Alice told me how well I had been doing with enthusiasm....then she looked me straight in the eyes and said...you know, if you DON'T have this epidural, you'll have her in an hour. If you do.....it'll be more like 4-6hrs. Hmmmmmmm
I asked to be checked for dilation again....which was TORTURE as they don't do that standing....I thought I'd die of pain while they checked. I was now past 8cm dilated....
OMG....I was soooooo close!! AND.... wouldn't you know it...the anesthesiologist was BUSY!!! The rest is kind of blurred...but the obsenities started...I accused all of the midwives of LYING to me....I was getting pretty LOUD....I was hooked up to IV in preparation for the Epidural....which meant I was back in bed and trying to cope with the new position and the contractions. Checked again....I was now 9.5!! With each new contraction I could feel my baby moving southward....guttural push sounds started!!
It was time to start pushing....HOLY CRAP!!! WHere was that epidural????
TOO LATE...
I pushed like I've never pushed before....I gave up at least 4x....I cried, I screamed, I'm not sure if I tried to speak in tongues!!! My husband said he had no idea I could be so guttural. He started thinking I was gonna need a c-section...but thankfully kept that to himself!! They brought in a mirror...and said "she's right there!!! When I looked in mirror....I said WHERE!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!?? She's not even close.
At that moment I realized I needed to push a LOT HARDER if she was going to come out!!! Out of nowhere came that superhuman MOMMY strength that you don't know you have until you have a baby. I let myself GO...I figured if I injured myself doing so....at least I was in a hospital where they could fix me. (total pushing time 35min)
The pain was freaking indescribable....then....she came out...the relief was indescribable!!
My beautiful baby girl was brought up to my chest....she pinked up immediately and I bawled. Within 10 minutes or so she was breastfeeding and I had fallen deeply in love with my 2nd daughter.
*I left out the part where Doug didn't realize he had been designated counter pressure person....and he's walking around the room eating dill pickle chips. My next contraction came and he wasn't ready.... I whirled around and yelled at him "put the fucking chips down!!!, and if you get any on me I'm going to kill you". LOL!!
**I also left out that getting stitched up for 2nd degree tears SUCKS without an epidural....I truly can't believe a baby that large came out of me!!!!
I`m 18 wks! We find out the sex today, what do you think?...
