I was scheduled to arrive at the hospital on 1/31/10 for cervidil overnight before starting pitocin in the morning. I was being induced at 39 weeks because all ultrasounds pointed to a very large baby. When I got to the hospital they started my iv and got me settled. The nurse checked me and I was already dilated to 2.5 so they decided I didn't need pitocin and told me I could go to sleep.

The next morning they started pitocin at 8am. The nurse warned me it might take hours before the pitocin started making me contract - 10 minutes later my contractions were 4 minutes apart lasting 90 seconds - guess she was wrong. Doc came in a broke my water at 8:30. I labored in bed, on a ball, leaning over the bed and anyother way I could get comfortable. Around 11:30 I was still at 4cm (since 8:30am) so I decided to go ahead and get an epidural. With Cadence I really didn't start to progress until after I relaxed with an epidural. I was comfortable, but unfortunately an hour later I was still at a 4. My doc, the nurse and my doula started mentally preparing me that if things didn't start progressing better we were looking at a c-section. Apparently that was just enough threat to scare my body into high gear. Less than 30 minutes later I suddenly felt very sick and started throwing up so my doula insisted they check me again. I was fully dilated - 6cm in 25 minutes - wow! that's when the real drama started - they suddenly lost Cortlyn's heartbeat completely. they placed an internal monitor on her head and found her heart rate was dropping into the low 50's with each contraction. My doc rushed in and informed me I had 15 minutes to try to push her out or they'd have to do an emergency c-section to save her. So I pushed with everything I had - 4 pushes and 7 minutes later she was completely out. 1:47pm Cortlyn Apel Peterson was born weighing in at 8lbs 4oz and 19.5 inches long. Not nearly the 10-11 pounder that my ultrasound predicted - thank goodness. She was absolutely beautiful and nursed right away - wow, what a sucking reflex, I thought she'd suck my nipple right off my boob. Overall, couldn't have had a better experience!
