Jude-Gabriel-Jonathan-Cullen-Smart`s birthstory
Well, better late than never!
Busy cooking pasta around 8pm, when at 8.20pm my waters broke ,only a little, but i knew then and there that i didn't have much time.
I immediately called the labour suite. The midwife insisted that i dont do anything and call back when i had 3 contractions 3 minutes apart, well 9 minutes later i called them back (get the picture?)
I knew that i would get strong and regular contractions straight away, as my previous two were very quick and i knew that if i were not assertive with the midwife, then i would be having him at home. (which is not what i wanted.)
The midwife told me I had better come in.
We arrived at 9pm. I got out of the car, just as the next contraction hit me like a train.
I struggled up a flight of stairs and into the delivery suite. James was struggling with the huge bags that i had packed. (the midwives couldn't stop laughing and said "are you staying for 2 weeks"?
I was assigned a midwife, nice ,laid back sort, very experienced. She said that the birthing pool was free, so i grabbed at the chance. Ended up staying there till the end (great).
Things were were happening so fast i could hardly take it in. The midwife examined me and i was 4cm dilated. this was now about 9.15pm. I knew all about the feeling in your rectum, as if you want to go to the toilet, well i really believed that i did. The midwife said it's the baby's head, but it just felt so close to the rectum i didn't believe her.
I actually could feel the baby move down the birth canal so quickly that i just had to let him and push.
Which was strange as my previous two, I was told not to push until told i was found to be 10cm. I told the midwife that i felt i had to push now and she said do what you feel you need to do. I questioned her and said , but you dont know whether i am fully dilated and she said when its your third and you have had previous quick labours then you dont need to check. She explained that dilatation would be so rapid and basically the baby will come out on his own whether you pushed or not. The pushing sensation is just a natural urge.
So i just let it happen and he came out pretty much on his own.
I turned around and was on my back at the point of when his head emerged, but had to wait about 30 seconds for the next contraction. It must have looked strange if anyone had walked in at that point, as all 3 of us James (partner) were just looking around the room waiting, with poor little Judes head out facing downwards.
One push and the rest of him came out. It was such an unbelievable moment. He was just facing me, all wet and screaming.
The midwife let the cord stop pulsating and then let james cut the cord.
Jude was so blue in the face from the quick descent and it lasted days, it was just bruising, but looked like he was having difficulty breathing, but the midwife said "look at the rest of his body?" and he was as pink as anything.
I have got to say this was the best birth ever.
James made a playlist for Jude's labour and two of the songs about 6 songs in was The Beatles 'Here comes the sun' and Hey Jude playing next. Just as Jude was born and emerged from the water, Hey Jude began to play. It still sends shivers down my spine. We could not have planned it as not knowing when he would be here. Just a coincidence i know.
