BIRTH STORY

I had to be induced as Erica was 2 weeks late! I went into hospital on 9th Feb. After 2 pessaries they still hadn't managed to induce me, so was supposed to go up to the labour ward at midnight to be given a stronger pessary, but they were busy so didn't end up getting me for it. I started having contractions and they were getting painful so I had a bath to try and ease the pain. I went to try and go back to sleep but ended up pacing up and down as I couldn't sleep through the contractions. My waters broke on their own at 430am Sunday morning. I stayed down on the ward for as long as I could, but the contractions started getting even more painful so I went up onto the labour ward so I could have gas and air. I was contracting for 8 hours and was still only 4cm dilated, so they put me on a syntocinon drip, which made the contractions more painful. I still was dilating so they had to up the dosage of the drip 3 times until I did start to dilate. The contractions got really painful so I had to have pethidine at this stage. I was in labour for 16 1/2 hours. At 854pm on Sunday evening I gave birth to a gorgeous baby girl, Erica, weighing 7lb 2oz (3230g), 52 cm long. After I had been stitched up and we were both cleaned up, we went back down onto the ward for the night, and we were allowed home the following evening.

The hospital phoned me on Monday 28th at about 630pm and asked if I could be at the hospital within the hour to be induced. My mum came round and took me to the hospital whilst dh stayed at home with dd. Got to the hospital at about 715pm. The labour ward was busy and so they didn't end up seeing me until midnight when they gave me a pessary. The midwife said that my cervix was still really high and that I would need another pessary in 8 hours time. I woke up at 6am and was having stomach cramps, which I put down to having had the pessary. By 730am after having been to the toilet loads and completely emptying my bowels I phoned dh and told him not to go too far from home! At 8am I was having really bad stomach pains and told the midwife that I needed some gas and air! She said to wait until they had finished their handover for the new shift soming onto the ward (!). I kept buzzing for them and when they came and found me doubled over the bed swearing away to myself, they took me up to the labour ward for gas and air. After 30 minutes of being hooked up and monitored, the midwife finally gave me my gas and air! I phoned dh and told him to get to the hospital. He was there by just after 9am and my dad stayed at home to watch dd for us. When he arrived, the midwife examined me and I was 4cm, so she broke my waters. By 10am, the pain was really bad so I asked for pethidine. The midwife gave me some, but the pain was still really bad, so I was swearing and asking for an epidural as I thought I had ages to go!!! I asked the midwife to examine me, but she said she didn't need to. I told her I had to push but she said not to, but I had to so she finally examined me and discovered that baby was on its way! She was born at 1022am and put straight onto my chest, dh got to cut the cord this time round. After 2 and a half hours in labour, I gave birth to a gorgeous baby girl, Ella, 8lb 2oz. After being cleaned up and stitched up (second degree tear) we went down to the post natal ward. Dh, dd and my parents came to visit us that evening and to take us home.
