Elijah-Wayne`s birthstory

When my water broke at 4am on the 10th June I was expecting all the dramatics to happen straight away!! My contractions however were irregular... I`d have two close together a couple at 10mins apart then wait half an hour for the next. At 1pm I went to the hospital, they had told me to come in for monitoring because it had been so long since my water broke. After a couple of hours they gave me the option of either staying at the hospital or going home. My contractions were 10mins apart and I live close to the hospital so we went home to wait things out. At 11pm I decided to lie down and try and get to sleep... 15mins later my contractions jumped from 10mins to 5mins so back to the hospital we went. After being checked it was determined that I was only 2cm dialated, but as it had been so long since my water broke the doctors and midwives were concerned and admitted me to a birthing room and started to discuss the what would need to be done to `speed things up`. The next few hours were a blur but I remember looking at the clock at 8am and bursting into tears... it had been 28hours and I was exhausted. I could no longer hold focus during a contraction and when the doctor did another internal and told me I was STILL only two cms. I was a mess and they were concerned about risks due to the length of the labour. They told me that if he wasn`t born by 6pm they would have to do a c-section. One of the midwives suggested pain reliefs and I opted for the epidural - I was really upset by the thought of having it but in all honesty it was the best thing I did and I am convinced it saved us from having to have a c-section. The epidural worked really well for two hours and I rested. After the two hours I noticed that it was wearing off the right hand side of my body, I didn`t mind and was only in slight pain. When the doctor next came in to check on us she looked at the monitor and determined that she thought the baby was sleeping and decided to do an internal to try and wake him up. She was shocked I was 10cm fully dialated!!! I had gone from 2 to 10 within an hour. Elijah however she said was just slightly out of position so I breathed threw a few more contractions. Once I was told to push things really sped up. The midwives even had to run and grab everything they needed. They were not expecting him to come so quickly!!!! At 1:13pm after 33hours of labour our beautiful boy was born!!! Weighing 3.7kg!! 33hours and all worth it!! And as the epidural had already started to wear off I was up and showering after a couple of hours!! All went well in the end, we were monitored closely in the hospital as they said the length of the labour meant we had a higher chance of infection but we were given the all clear just two days later!!! Now we`re at home and doing well with only a few minor feeding challenges as my milk has not come in yet. Elijah however is doing well. I am still breastfeeding and pumping whilst comping him with some formula feeds.
