Ian was our little surprise, planned baby. We stopped using birth control just before our wedding, knowing we wanted to start "trying" immediately. We were just shocked that it worked so quickly. Two weeks after our wedding I took a home pregnancy test and we were delighted to see that little pink line. So, June 30th has come to be quite a magical day. It is the date of our first date, the day of our wedding one year later, and likely the day we conceived our little guy.

This pregnancy was, again, quite difficult. Chronic nausea and vomiting and a total intolerance of fluids, which caused several urinary tract infections and kidney stones that may have triggered my premature labor. At 32 weeks and 5 days, Ian was born. I showed all sorts of signs of premature labor (70% effaced, more than 6 contractions/hour, a positive fetal fibronectin test) the three days before Ian was born, but my doctor didn't seem too concerned about any of it. We were at the mercy of her expertise and blindly accepted her recommendations that sent me home instead of straight to a high risk maternity unit. My water broke within 24 hours of being sent home. Ian's delivery was also unintentionally unmedicated (ouch again!), but went much quicker than with my daughter. Ian was born less than 2 hours after my water broke and with only two pushes. Due to his prematurity, he went straight to the NICU, but never required oxygen and due to his good size, only spent 11 days in the hospital. I roomed in with him, but was readmitted myself two times after delivery due to severe hypertension. We were both discharged home on Valentine's Day and he has been thriving ever since!

Maya was born almost 9 years ago, so hard to beleive! After a long pregnancy marked by chronic morning sickness, a massive weight gain (100 lbs!) and various other pregnancy related discomforts, I brought my little girl into the world on a Sunday morning after 6 hours of pain-free (not intentional) pushing. When she came out, she was "lethargic" and had a very low APGAR score. She was swarmed by doctors and nurses, who refused to tell me what was happening. Eventually, I got out of them that she had a sacral dimple and a heart murmur. She went to the NICU to undergo testing, but all was well in the end and she has been an amazingly bright and healthy child since then. I have known Maya's temperment since birth....total extrovert, all sunshine and happiness, strong willed. She is a great kid and she has the special gift of making people feel good with her endless energy and postive attitude.
