Born 7lbs 10oz, 18 inches
After leaving the doctor's office on 1/20, we decided on a planned induction on 1/28 if our little peanut hadn't decided to show that adorable face before then. I left that day with an appointment for a NST and AFI on Monday 1/26 and a follow up with doc on 1/27. NST & AFI came back with flying colors. We went in to see doc on Tuesday at 1:30, I was still not even dilated to 1 and she informed us to check into the hospital that night at 7:30 to begin the induction process. Jake and I were completely blindsided by this news and, over a big lunch, prepared a game plan for packing and informing family members in the five hours we had before check-in. Tuesday night was long, the anticipation grew as the hours went by. Nurses were in and out of the room every hour to take my vitals as I tried to rest with monitors on my tummy and an IV in my arm...needless to say, about 1am I asked for an Ambien. After about three and a half hours of sleep, we were awakened to begin the Pitocin. 6am as the nurse was checking the progress of my cervix...my water broke...and the contractions began.
Throughout the day, nurses were in upping my Pitocin dosage and checking vitals. I was uncomfortable but managed to focus through the pain as Jake talked me through each and every contraction. He held my hand, rubbed my back, assisted in & suggested changing positions, walked me to the bathroom every half hour, encouraged and uplifted me as I grew more and more tired...I honestly couldn't have stayed that strong without him next to me. After 13 hours of contractions, doc suggested that we up the Pitocin one last time and if that didn't cause Baby's head to engage, than a C-section would need to be considered. I was really hoping for a natural birth, so within these two hours, Jake and I really focused hard. The contractions were regular, every two minutes, and stronger than I could ever have imagined. Finally at 9pm, doc came back and I was only dilated to 4. After this exhausting day, it was all going to end in what I had feared most. I balled as the doctor, nurse and anesthesiologist explained what was going to happen. Jake held me. And just like that, the Pitocin was off, the contractions stopped and we were packing our bags to vacate that L&D room.
The surgery room was alien-encounter like. Cold, bright white walls and people shuffling around in masks and blue suits. The spinal shot was by far the most scared I have been in quite some time - not that I'm terrified of needles, but the thought of what could happen with one wrong move brings tears to my eyes still. But, everything went as planned and as soon as I heard that beautiful cry, nothing else mattered, my heart was complete and the waterworks started. Doc says..."Dad, what is it?" Jake looked at Baby, and said, "it's a.....girl!"
I am very thankful that during our stay in the recovery room, Jaina and I were able to have some skin on skin time before her bath. Although, it wasn't the delivery I had planned or wanted, I am overjoyed to have a healthy baby girl. I never knew I could love so completely...it feels good.
